Zebby Matthews Dominating In Double-A

Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Zebby Matthews has been spectacular since his promotion to Double-A Wichita in early May. Through 40 2/3 innings, he's posted a 1.55 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, and 48:3 K/BB ratio. There are many great qualities to his game, but none stand out more than his pinpoint control. In 63 1/3 innings this season, Matthews has allowed just three walks, all while notching 76 total strikeouts. The Twins' No. 19 prospect (per MLB.com), Matthews is expected to make his MLB debut sometime next year.

Garrett Crochet's Workload To Start Dwindling

The Chicago White Sox plan to start dwindling left-hander Garrett Crochet's workload as we near the second half of the season. "We're going to start dwindling his workload down a little bit, and we'll manage that correctly," manager Pedro Grifol said. "But it's not something we're going to put out and say, 'Here's what we're doing,' because nothing in this game is black and white." The 25-year-old southpaw has been the team's best pitcher in 2024 and one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he's already up to 94 1/3 innings, 40 more than his career-high set in 2021. Crochet made his first big-league start on Opening Day after having Tommy John surgery in April of 2022. He leads the American League with 130 K's and is also 5-2 with a 1.53 ERA in his last 11 starts. Fantasy managers must continue to run him out there, but just be aware that his pitch counts are going to start dwindling as the season progresses.

Justin Verlander Won't Travel With Team On Upcoming Road Trip

Houston Astros right-hander Justin Verlander (neck), who is eligible to come off the 15-day injured list on Monday, will not travel with the team to New York on their upcoming road trip that starts on Friday against the Mets, according to manager Joe Espada. Verlander is improving but still hasn't started playing catch. The Astros continue their road trip next week in Toronto and Minnesota, but Verlander is unlikely to pitch in either of those series. And the longer the 41-year-old stays on the injured list, the more likely he'll be required to make a minor-league rehab start before rejoining Houston's rotation. While nothing is official yet, there's a chance we won't see the future Hall of Famer until after the All-Star break in mid-July.

Tommy Edman Suffers Sprained Ankle

St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman (ankle, wrist) sprained his ankle while fielding ground balls on Tuesday, according to manager Oliver Marmol. Edman's wrist rehab will now be put on hold while the severity of his ankle sprain is determined. It's yet another setback in what has been a frustrating year for Edman and his fantasy managers, as he has yet to play at all in 2024. It's especially frustrating for the 29-year-old after he had made some real strides in his recovery from right-wrist surgery. It's unclear how long his rehab will be put on hold, but hopefully Edman can still start a minor-league rehab assignment sooner than later. At this point, we probably won't see Edman until the second half of the season, but he should be a lineup regular for the Red Birds when he's finally cleared to make his 2024 debut.

Logan O'Hoppe Resting Against A's

Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe is getting the day off on Wednesday in the series finale against the visiting division-rival Oakland Athletics. Matt Thaiss will do the catching for right-hander Roansy Contreras and will bat ninth against A's right-hander Joey Estes. O'Hoppe will get a much-needed day of rest after starting in each of the team's last 11 contests. He has been hot at the plate in the month of June, going 19-for-61 (.312) with three home runs, six doubles, eight RBI, a stolen base and 13 runs scored in 18 games played to raise his season slash line to .269/.320/.457 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI in 234 at-bats. O'Hoppe is valuable in all fantasy formats at the shallow catching position. Thaiss, meanwhile, is a DFS option to avoid at the position with a .217 average (13-for-60) with only one homer in 2024.
