Russell Wilson Won't Play In Preseason Opener, Still In Pole Position For Starting Gig

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson (calf) will not play in the team's preseason opener on Friday against the Houston Texans. Wilson returned to training camp practice on Tuesday after missing some time with a minor calf injury, which allowed backup Justin Fields to get some run with the first-team offense. When asked if Wilson was still in the pole position and in the lead in the QB competition, head coach Mike Tomlin said, "You guys saw the depth chart I released yesterday. That is real." Pittsburgh listed Wilson as the starter over Fields on their first unofficial depth chart this week, but if Fields outplays Wilson for the rest of camp and the preseason, it's not out of the question that Fields could win the battle for the starting job entering the regular season. The 35-year-old Wilson proved the last two years in Denver that he's no longer a QB1 in fantasy, and that shouldn't change in Pittsburgh.

Russell Wilson Returns To Practice Tuesday

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson (calf) returned to a full practice at training camp on Tuesday after being sidelined with a minor calf injury for over a week. With Wilson sidelined the last week-plus, backup Justin Fields had plenty of opportunities to impress the coaching staff while working with the first-team offense. Fields was up and down for the most part, although Wilson's injury has opened the door for this to become more of a QB competition than it was earlier this offseason. Wilson and Fields alternated reps on Tuesday and figure to both play in the preseason opener this Friday against the Houston Texans. Wilson may still be in "pole" position for the starting gig in Pittsburgh to open the 2024 regular season, but Fields could easily flip the script if he outplays the 35-year-old veteran throughout the preseason.

Jameis Winston To Start Browns Preseason Opener

Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Jameis Winston is set to start the Browns' preseason opener on Saturday versus the Green Bay Packers. It remains to be seen if starter Deshaun Watson (shoulder) will play during the preseason, but this game will give the Browns a chance to see what they have in Winston. The 30-year-old Winston signed with the Browns on a one-year deal with Cleveland during the offseason. Winston spent the past four seasons primarily as a backup with the New Orleans Saints. The former No. 1 overall pick appeared in seven games in 2023 and recorded 264 passing yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He should not be on fantasy radars for 2024. However, with Winston having extensive starting experience, hopefully, he will give fantasy managers a good look at some of the Browns' potential starting wide receivers or sleepers in this game.

Giants Using Malik Nabers In Many Ways

Through just two weeks of training camp, New York Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers is already looking like he can be a playmaker. In nearly every practice, Nabers has shown off with highlight-reel catches. The Giants are already using Nabers in a variety of ways during practice, and head coach Brian Daboll has even turned to the rookie wideout for play-calling input. During a two-minute drive at the end of the first week of practices, Nabers told Daboll he wanted a go-ball. Quarterback Daniel Jones then connected on a deep ball down the right sideline for the kind of catch that fans want to see on a regular basis. Although New York's offense is questionable at best to begin 2024, the 21-year-old No. 6 overall pick should be one of its lone bright spots. Nabers' ADP of 70 on Yahoo may be bargain as an exciting WR2 option this summer, but he'll need functional QB play for weekly consistency.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Favorite For No. 2 Role

New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. has reportedly been impressing the organization early in training camp. The fifth-round rookie appears to be taking the lead in the competition for the second string job in the backfield. Tracy's ability in the short yardage passing game appears to be giving him the advantage over Eric Gray and Dante Miller. It's worth noting that Tracy spent a majority of his career as a wide receiver in college before switching to running back last season. That being said, Tracy certainly has the skillset to get the job done as a receiver in the backfield. However, it's uncertain how much of a usage Tracy could have behind Devin Singletary. Regardless, Tracy is someone to keep an eye on during training camp and in the preseason.
