Steelers Confirm Russell Wilson As Starter For Preseason Finale

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin recently addressed the quarterback situation, confirming that Russell Wilson (calf) will start in the preseason finale. When asked if Wilson remains the starting quarterback, Tomlin affirmed, "Nothing's changed regarding their positions, and yes, he will start." While it's not surprising that Wilson will play, his status as the starter is notable given the concerns raised after his performance in Week 2 of the preseason against the Bills. Wilson struggled in that game, throwing for just 47 yards on ten attempts and taking three sacks for 21 yards lost. This preseason game was Wilson's first live-action since early January and followed a period of missing significant training camp time due to a calf injury. As such, Wilson is considered a late QB2 or early QB3 with uncertain job security, though he could be a viable option in favorable matchups.

Russell Wilson, Starters To Play Saturday

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson says most of the team's starters will play in the preseason finale on Saturday against the hosting Detroit Lions at Ford Field. It's become a compelling storyline out of Steelers training camp as to whether Wilson or Justin Fields will be the Week 1 starter against the Atlanta Falcons, and Saturday's final exhibition outing will mark the last chance for the two signal-callers to make their case for the QB1 job. Pittsburgh's offense under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is set to be one of the NFL's run-heaviest units no matter who's under center in 2024, and while Wilson, 35, offers the attack a veteran stabilizing presence, Fields scored the fifth-most fantasy points per dropback (0.58) among qualifiers last year and would certainly be the more appealing fantasy play of the two if he gets the nod.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Returning To Practice

New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (ankle) will practice on Tuesday in training camp. "He's good," head coach Brian Daboll said on Tuesday. Tracy was carted off the practice field with an ankle injury last Tuesday, so it's highly encouraging to already see him back in action for the Giants. The 24-year-old fifth-round rookie from Purdue is tentatively slotted in as New York's No. 2 option in the backfield behind workhorse starter Devin Singletary this summer, and it remains to be seen if he'll get a chance to build on that status in Saturday's preseason finale against the New York Jets. Tracy isn't going to start the campaign with standalone fantasy value, but he certainly appears to be the preferred handcuff for Singletary's managers.

Russell Wilson Still Has The "Edge" For Starting Job

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson has the "edge" to win the No. 1 spot on the depth chart for Week 1. While Fowler added Justin Fields has at least done enough to make things "interesting," head coach Mike Tomlin appreciates Wilson's "command of the offense." The 35-year-old is coming off two miserable seasons in Denver. He also battled a calf injury during training camp. With that said, Tomlin will likely wait a bit longer before announcing the team's starting signal-caller. Although Wilson may have always been the favorite to start in Week 1, Fields could enter the equation if things don't go as planned for the veteran.

Russell Wilson Throws For 47 Yards In Preseason Loss

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson made his first preseason appearance with his new team in a 9-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. Wilson completed eight of his 10 passes for 47 yards in the contest while taking three sacks. The veteran drew the start and worked about halfway into the second quarter before calling it a night and stepping aside for Justin Fields. Wilson has missed a large portion of camp with a calf injury but the team has been calling him the Week 1 starter, although Fields has performed well in camp and could push Wilson for the chance to be under center in the opener against the Atlanta Falcons.
