Baltimore Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander (knee) is serving as the team's designated hitter and is batting fifth on Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Sonny Gray. Santander has been dealing with a bothersome bruised knee of late and was held out of Sunday's contest against the Seattle Mariners as a result. It mostly gives the 29-year-old issues while running the bases and in the outfielder, but Santander is apparently feeling good enough to DH for the series opener in St. Louis. In 10 career at-bats against Gray, Santander has only two hits, but one of them cleared the fences. The Venezuelan switch-hitter's power is attractive in fall fantasy leagues in the middle of a strong Baltimore lineup, but Santander has been inconsistent so far in 2024 and has gone 10-for-49 (.204) with three homers and seven RBI in 14 games so far in May.
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander (knee) is out of the starting lineup on Sunday against the visiting Seattle Mariners while dealing with a sore and swollen left knee. Santander said running in the outfield has been tricky and he expects it to be a few more days before he's 100 percent. He crashed into the outfield wall on Wednesday and aggravated his knee while running the bases. The 29-year-old served as the team's designated hitter the last two days but will get a day off on Sunday and could also miss the series opener on Monday in St. Louis against the Cardinals. Austin Hays is getting a start in left field and is batting sixth, while Ryan O'Hearn is serving as the team's DH and is batting in the three-hole on Sunday against Mariners right-hander George Kirby. Santander is having a tough season to this point and is hitting .204 (10-for-49) with three homers and seven RBI in 14 games to this point in May.
Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that outfielder Anthony Santander (knee) bruised his knee early in Wednesday's game against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays during a collision with the outfield wall. The injury got worse on Santander's double and slide in the eighth inning, which is why he was pulled from the contest in the ninth. For now fantasy managers should consider the 29-year-old as day-to-day. Santander went 2-for-4 with a strikeout in the 3-2 walk-off win to raise his season average to a weak .220 and his OPS to .745. The Orioles have a scheduled off day on Thursday before they start a series on Friday at Camden Yards against the visiting Seattle Mariners. Fantasy managers will want to check back then to see if Santander is back in action. Santander came into Wednesday's game slashing .212/.293/.438 with seven home runs and 25 RBI for the O's.
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander had a big day at the dish in Sunday's 11-1 drubbing of the Cincinnati Reds. Santander finished the day 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored, and five RBI. The 29-year-old put the finishing touches on the offensive outburst, hitting a three-run homer in the ninth. Santander desperately needed the big game, as his triple slash line heading in was a dreadful .200/.276/.392 with only five homers. It's been a step back this year for the veteran, but a day like today could wake him up and turn him back into the four-category contributor that fantasy managers expected when they drafted him.
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander is not in the starting lineup on Monday against the visiting Minnesota Twins. It allows the Orioles to keep Colton Cowser in the starting lineup in right field while he hits fifth against Twins right-hander Louie Varland. Cowser is swinging one of the hottest bats in baseball right now and has started the year going 15-for-34 (.441) with four home runs, 13 RBI, two stolen bases and seven runs scored. The 24-year-old's hot start has made Austin Hays the odd man out in Baltimore's outfield situation on most days. Santander has three home runs on the year in 61 at-bats, but he's also hitting just .180 (11-for-61) in the early going. Cowser has never faced Varland in his career.
