Athletics starting pitcher Luis Severino let up nine hits and eight earned runs over four innings of work in a 12-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday. He hit a batter, struck out two, and issued two free passes while totaling 97 pitches (57 strikes). The Yankees jumped on Severino early, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning before he could get the second out in the frame. He'd let up another run an inning later on an Oswaldo Cabrera double before unraveling again in the fifth and finally getting lifted. It was easily his worst outing of the season, but the 31-year-old has now coughed up 12 runs over his last ten innings and four or more in a start four times. He'll bring a 4.70 ERA and 1.32 WHIP into a road matchup with the San Francisco Giants late next week. Severino boasts the lowest strikeout rate of his career (17.2%) while affording batters a .295 xBA against him.

The New York Yankees are activating corner infielder DJ LeMahieu (calf) from the 10-day injured list ahead of Monday's series opener against the Seattle Mariners, according to Newsday's Erik Boland. It's unclear if LeMahieu will be in uniform in Seattle, but he has now rejoined the team as he looks to make his 2025 season debut. The 36-year-old veteran has yet to make his season debut due to a calf strain that he suffered in spring training, and he was recently set back by a hip ailment. In nine minor-league rehab games, the former two-time batting champion and three-time All-Star went 12-for-27 with a home run. The Yankees will most likely ease LeMahieu back into game action at the big-league level, but he could see notable playing time at second base in the Bronx with Jazz Chisholm Jr. (oblique) out for an extended period. The oft-injured LeMahieu is looking to bounce back after hitting .204 in 67 games in 2024.

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown said on Sports Talk 790 that left-handed pitching prospect Colton Gordon is a candidate to be recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to start on Wednesday against the visiting Kansas City Royals. Gordon could temporarily join the team's starting rotation in the big leagues as they move to a six-man rotation. The 26-year-old southpaw is regarded as Houston's No. 14 prospect by MLB Pipeline and could be a short-term stop-gap to help fill in for the injured Hayden Wesneski (elbow). The former eight-round pick in 2021 out of Central Florida has been sharp in eight starts at Triple-A, going 4-0 with a 2.55 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 43:8 K:BB in 42 1/3 innings. Gordon won't be a must-add in single-year fantasy leagues because he may only make a few starts. He leans on a low-velocity heater and sweeping slider to keep hitters off balance.

Detroit Tigers shortstop prospect Kevin McGonigle (ankle) began a rehab assignment on May 10 at Single-A Lakeland, going 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, and a run scored in his firstgame back. The Tigers' second-ranked prospect (MLB No. 26) doubled twice and collected four RBI for High-A West Michigan on Opening Day, but suffered an ankle sprain that has caused him to miss over a month of the season. The left-handed hitter was fantastic last season at Single-A, slashing .326/.407/.470, with four home runs, 20 steals, and he walked more than he struck out in 60 games before earning a promotion to High-A. The former 37th-overall draft pick played 14 games at High-A before a hand injury ended his season prematurely. Hopefully the injuries aren't going to be a recurring issue, and look for the 20-year-old to rejoin High-A after his rehab is complete. He's still a couple of years away from the majors, but he is a talent that dynasty managers should keep tabs on.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Victor Scott II is absent from the team's starting lineup for the series opener on Monday in Philadelphia against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Jose Barrero draws into the lineup in center field and will bat ninth against Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez. Scott will take a seat against a tough southpaw after he started each of the team's last nine games. The 24-year-old left-handed hitter has batted a strong .290/.357/.403 with two homers, 18 RBI, 20 runs and 11 steals in 142 plate appearances as St. Louis' starting center fielder this year, and he's gone 10-for-28 (.357) with a double, four RBI and a steal in nine games so far in May. Barrero will be a low-upside DFS sleeper out of the nine-hole for the Red Birds on Monday night. The 27-year-old Cuban is hitless in his two career at-bats against Sanchez.
