Drew Pomeranz Acquired By Cubs

The Seattle Mariners have decided to trade left-handed relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz to the Chicago Cubs on Monday. The veteran southpaw reportedly has an upward-mobility clause in his contract. That means that the Mariners needed to offer Pomeranz to every team, and if there was an organization willing to promote him, then he needed to be traded there or recalled to Seattle's bullpen. He'll be sent to Chicago after posting a 4.66 ERA with 14 strikeouts and six walks in 9 2/3 innings in Triple-A. Pomeranz hasn't pitched in the MLB since 2021, so it's unclear what exactly the Cubs are going to get here.

Cade Smith Earns First Save

Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher Cade Smith was tasked with holding a two-run lead versus the New York Yankees on Monday. The Guardians went with Smith after Emmanuel Clase was declared unavailable after pitching in three straight games. Smith didn't have any issues as he retired the side on only 11 pitches and struck out two batters in the process. This was a nice surprise for fantasy managers, but Smith is likely to return to his setup role after this game. He's worth rostering in some fantasy formats, but won't offer great value with Clase as the primary closer.

Jesus Tinoco Notches Second Save

Miami Marlins relief pitcher Jesus Tinoco was called upon to hold a three-run lead versus the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. It appears both Calvin Faucher and Anthony Bender were unavailable, so Tinoco got the call to close out this game. Tinoco didn't have any issues as he tossed a perfect ninth inning to record his second save of the season. This is now back-to-back save chances for Tinoco, but fantasy managers shouldn't get too excited. The right-hander doesn't appear to be the primary option for saves and will probably only get occasional chances.

Max Meyer Records 14 Strikeouts

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Max Meyer posted an unbelievable performance during Monday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. The right-hander had his swing-and-miss stuff going as the Reds could barely touch him during this outing. Meyer tossed six scoreless innings, allowing five hits, and striking out 14 batters along the way. The 26-year-old already registered double digit strikeouts by the fourth inning of Monday's contest. Meyer has been excellent early in the season with three earned runs or less in every outing so far. He'll take a 2.10 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 41/7 K/BB ratio across five starts into his next outing against the Seattle Mariners. Meyer is likely going to be a popular waiver wire addition after this epic performance.

James Triantos Dealing With Leg Tightness

Chicago Cubs infield prospect James Triantos was removed from last Thursday's Triple-A Iowa game due to tightness in his leg and has missed both games since. Sunday's game was postponed and the team had a day off on Monday, so, after two days off, it will be telling as to the severity of the injury if he remains absent when the team returns to actionon Tuesday. The Cubs' fifth-ranked prospect (MLB No. 69) was slashing just .231/.273/.269 with no home runs through 13 games this season, but did have six stolen bases racked up already. The right-handed hitter slashed .300/.346/.427 between Double and Triple-A last season with seven home runs and 47 steals over 115 games, and won the Arizona Fall League'sOffensive Player of the Year award in 2023. He's expected to make his major league debut this season, according to MLB.com, but Nico Hoerner blocks his path at the 22-year-old's primary position. His potential to hit for average and tally stolen bases would make him intriguing for fantasy in deeper leagues whenever he does get the call.
