Athletics infielder Zack Gelof (hand) was removed early during Wednesday's spring training contest. Gelof was taken out of the contest after getting hit by a pitch on the hand. A's manager Mark Kotsay believes Gelof will be fine and said he was removed for precautionary reasons. However, the A's will have Gelof undergo X-rays to make sure there isn't any significant damage. There should be an update on his status at some point in the next day or two.

MLB.com's Alex Stumpf writes that the Pittsburgh Pirates are still in the process of learning about the severity of right-hander Jared Jones' right-elbow injury. They have done imaging and are now waiting on a second opinion, according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. It's unclear when Jones might be able to resume throwing again. The hope is that the Pirates will either have a resolution or know what the next steps are for Jones in the coming days. What we do know is that the 23-year-old won't make his final spring training start, according to manager Derek Shelton. Jones is one of the team's big three starters alongside Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller, so losing him for an extended period of time would be pretty devastating. Jones looked good as a rookie but did miss most of July and August with a lat strain. If Jones is forced to open the year on the injured list, Andrew Heaney could be his replacement.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Friday is the target for first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (back) to return to a Grapefruit League game against the Detroit Tigers. He will go through baseball activities in camp on Thursday. Goldy has been dealing with a tight back this week, but it's not believed to be anything serious, and as long as he doesn't have a setback this weekend in his return to game action, he should be ready to roll next Thursday for Opening Day. After two straight seasons of a decline offensively, fantasy managers that have already rolled the dice on the 37-year-old former MVP have to be pleased by him going 10-for-32 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 13 Grapefruit League games to this point. Goldy may no longer be an elite fantasy first baseman, but if he stays healthy in 2025, he could easily bounce back in the Bronx.

The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned pitching prospect Matt Sauer to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday. The club had just selected the righty's contract and he could have pitched in the Tokyo Series but did not enter either contest. The 26-year-old will head back to the minors in hopes of getting another shot in the majors later this season, likely in a low-leverage relief role. Known for a 17-strikeout performance at Double-A in 2022, the former second-round draft pick pitched to a 1:8 BB:K this spring in seven-and-two-thirds innings pitched, but it also came with seven earned runs allowed on 10 hits. Even if he makes it back to the majors this season, fantasy managers in deep NL-only leagues may want to see him prove he can be successful before rostering him. Additionally, RHP Landon Knack and OF James Outman were also optioned to Triple-A.

Athletics starting pitcher Osvaldo Bido has officially won a spot in the rotation, according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. He's struggled this spring but is coming off a surprisingly promising 2024. He posted a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 63 strikeouts in 63.1 innings for the Pirates. His underlying metrics looked even better, with a .272 xERA (94th percentile), .181 xBA (98th percentile), and a 27.0% hard-hit rate (100th percentile). He's one to watch in deeper leagues and could be worth a late-round flier at the end of drafts.
