Athletics second baseman Zack Gelof (ribs, wrist) is making progress in his recovery from a stress reaction in his ribs. He could start a rehab assignment next week, according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. Gelof hasn't played at all this season on account of multiple injuries. He began the year on the shelf while recovering from right wrist surgery, and then Gelof's Triple-A rehab stint was halted May 5 because of his rib injury. Gelof appeared in 138 games, swatted 17 home runs and stole 25 bases last season, but the 25-year-old could only muster a .211/.270/.362 line in 547 trips to the plate. The Athletics have mostly turned to Luis Urias at the keystone this year in Gelof's absence. Urias has batted a decent .250/.336/.417 with six homers in 132 plate appearances.

Athletics second baseman Zack Gelof (ribs, wrist) was pulled from his minor-league rehab assignment du to a stress reaction in his ribs and has been shut down from swinging for the time being, according to MLB.com's Martin Gallegos. Gelof was forced to start the 2025 season on the injured list after having surgery on his right wrist, but he had started a rehab assignment in the minors last week. The 25-year-old went 1-for-7 with an RBI, two runs scored, a walk and two strikeouts in just three rehab games with Triple-A Las Vegas before suffering a new injury. Stress reactions can be quite serious, so there's no telling how long he'll be shut down from swinging a bat, or when he'll be able to return to his rehab assignment. Depending on how long Gelof is away from Vegas, he might not be able to make his season debut for the A's until June.

Athletics infielder Zack Gelof (wrist) appears to be inching closer to a return to the field. Gelof hasn't played at all this season after suffering a right wrist injury during spring training. As a result, Gelof underwent surgery, which has kept him sidelined until now. Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Gelof could begin a rehab assignment as early as next Tuesday. The expectation is Gelof is going to need around 35-40 at-bats before returning to the A's roster. That means, Gelof will probably be on a rehab assignment for around two weeks. Fantasy managers should expect him back in the fold around mid-May. Until then, Luis Urias figures to be the primary option at second base.
