Baltimore Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser is making his first start of the year on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals and right-hander Alec Marsh, starting in left field and batting eighth. Austin Hays will start on the bench on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Cowser has gone 1-for-3 so far on the year off the bench through the team's first four games. He earned a spot on Baltimore's Opening Day roster by hitting .304/.418/.717 with six home runs and 13 RBI in 55 Grapefruit League plate appearances. However, Cowser's spot at the bottom of the O's batting order on Tuesday doesn't make him a terribly attractive DFS play, and the weather on the East Coast doesn't look excellent, either.
After a dominant performance in the Grapefruit League this spring, Baltimore Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser has made the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old forced the Orioles hand after hitting .304 with six homers, 13 RBI and a pristine 1.135 OPS. Cowser will enter the season as a fourth outfielder, but it is unlikely that he would have broken camp with the squad if Baltimore wasn't planning to give him a decent number of at-bats. The outfielder made his big-league debut in 2023, but struggled with a .115 batting average to go along with four RBI in 61 at-bats. Cowser does have a patient eye at the plate and this spring is more of an indication of his potential versus his cup of coffee last year. Managers in redraft leagues should be patient with Cowser and see if he plays his way into an everyday role with his potential to be a productive piece in what should be one of the better offenses this season.
Baltimore Orioles outfield Colton Cowser continued his strong spring by going 1-for-4 with a solo home run versus the Toronto Blue Jays in Tuesday's Grapefruit League contest. Cowser is now hitting a robust .364 with five home runs, 10 RBI, one stolen base and nine runs scored in 37 at-bats. Cowser is one of the Orioles best prospects, but does not have a clear path to everyday playing time at the moment and the club may prefer that he gets everyday at-bats on the farm than be a platoon player in the big leagues. The 24-year-old has a very patient eye at the play and that is a good sign for young players, but he did struggle in his big-league debut in 2023 with a .115 batting average to go along with four RBI in 61 at-bats. If an injury should occur in the outfield, Cowser will be the biggest beneficiary, but without a clear path to playing time, his best value remains in dynasty formats.
Baltimore Orioles top outfield prospect Colton Cowser continued his torrid spring, belting his fourth home run in a 6-6 Grapefruit League tie with the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. He's now in a five-way tie for the spring home run lead and is 9-for-20 (.450) overall in Grapefruit League play. The powerful lefty has shown a good eye at the plate too, collecting four walks while also getting plunked by two pitches, putting his OBP at .577. It was reported last week that he's the front runner to earn the fourth outfield spot for the O's and he's done nothing since then to make us think otherwise. He's worth a look in AL-only leagues and certainly stashable in dynasty formats.
The Baltimore Banner's Andy Kostka said that outfielder Colton Cowser made some changes to his swing this offseason in order to help him hit the fastball better. Kostka also said that Cowser "is an (early) front-runner to make the (Orioles) Opening Day roster." So far in spring training, the 23-year-old's swing changes have paid off, as he's gone 4-for-11 with three home runs and three walks. As things stand now, Cowser could be Baltimore's fourth outfielder to open the 2024 regular season. He obviously doesn't have any appeal in mixed fantasy leagues, but Cowser could be worth a look in AL-only formats if he continues to hit well and earn more playing time for the reigning American League East champions. Cowser struck out almost 30% of the time with the O's in 2023 but did hit 17 home runs at Triple-A Norfolk.
