Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) will make a minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday. Garrett is ready to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment after throwing a three-inning simulated game earlier this week. The 26-year-old southpaw will probably need another rehab start in the minors before the Fish consider activating him from the injured list to join the major-league starting rotation. With both Sandy Alcantara (elbow) and Eury Perez (elbow) now out for the year, the Marlins need all the help they can get in their rotation now. Garrett is recovering from a left-shoulder impingement in spring training and is worth a waiver-wire pickup in deep-mixed leagues when he's healthy.
Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) is scheduled to throw three innings or 50 pitches at extended spring training on Tuesday. If Garrett comes out of that session without any setbacks, he could be ready to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment. He's trying to recover from a left-shoulder impingement since early in spring training, which has caused him to open the 2024 season on the injured list. If the 26-year-old southpaw avoids setbacks on his minor-league rehab assignment, he could make his season debut in Miami's starting rotation before the end of April. After going 9-7 with a 3.66 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 29 walks and a career-high 156 strikeouts in 159 2/3 innings for the Fish last year, Garrett has appeal for rotation depth in deep-mixed fantasy leagues when he's healthy.
Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) threw two innings in extended spring training on Thursday and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Miami on Sunday. Garrett was forced to start the season on the injured list due to a left-shoulder impingement that he suffered during spring training. However, he's working his way back and should be able to make his 2024 debut for the Marlins before the end of April, barring any setbacks. The 26-year-old southpaw had a 3.66 ERA in 159 2/3 innings in his first full season in Miami's starting rotation, giving him plenty of upside in mixed leagues if he can just stay healthy. The former seventh overall pick by the Fish in 2016 has a wipeout slider that generates a lot of swings and misses.
Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said right-hander Edward Cabrera (shoulder) and left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) both threw bullpen sessions in camp on Wednesday. Cabrera's bullpen consisted of around 20 pitches (all fastballs), while Garrett got up and down three times and is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Sunday. Cabrera, 25, threw for the first time since being diagnosed with a right-shoulder impingement last week. He is going to start the season on the injured list and will need several more bullpens before facing live hitters again. Garrett, 26, also won't be ready for Opening Day but could make his 2024 debut before the end of April. The Marlins' starting rotation is really limping to the starting line this year with Cabrera, Garrett and Eury Perez (elbow, finger) all ailing.
Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session as he looks to build up after experiencing soreness early in camp. Garrett is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. The southpaw enjoyed a quality season in the 2023 campaign, working to a 3.66 ERA and an impressive 19.3% K-BB% on the back of a minuscule 4.4% BB%, the latter of which ranked fourth among pitchers who tossed at least 150 innings a season ago. The 26-year-old is certainly worth stashing in all fantasy formats as he sports a 3.86 ERA across 58 outings (56 starts) in his career, but also a 3.63 ERA alongside an 18.7% K-BB% over the last two seasons. A.J. Puk could crack the Marlins' rotation to begin the season in Braxton's absence.
