Miami Marlins left-handed starting pitcher Braxton Garrett (elbow) will miss the entire 2025 season after having left-elbow UCL revision surgery that included an internal brace back in December. This is really bad news for an already thin Marlins starting rotation. Ace Sandy Alcantara (elbow) is also recovering from Tommy John surgery. Garrett made only seven starts for the Fish in 2024 after missing several months with a strained left forearm. The 27-year-old southpaw suffered a setback with his left elbow while throwing a bullpen in September, which eventually led to him going under the knife. Garrett had Tommy John surgery back in 2016 shortly after he was drafted as well. The good news is his internal-brace procedure should speed up his recovery, but for a pitcher with his extensive injury history, there's no guarantee he'll be ready for 2026.
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett (elbow) was diagnosed with a left elbow impingement on Friday. Garrett had been undergoing further evaluation last week after suffering a setback during a bullpen session in mid-September. He will be continuing a throwing progression program at the Marlins' player development complex in Jupiter, FL. The lefty's last start was on June 17th and he only made seven starts in 2024. He started the season on the IL with a shoulder impingement that held him out of major league action until May and then experienced elbow discomfort prior to his scheduled start on June 23rd. The 27-year-old has shown promise when healthy, posting a 3.58 ERA in 2022 and a 3.66 ERA in 2023. But with injuries piling up, fantasy managers may start to wonder how much value he can have going forward. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on his progress going into spring training and take caution if he's on their roster in 2025.
Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (forearm) will make a minor-league rehab start with Single-A Jupiter on Thursday and will go either three innings or 50 pitches. Garrett has been given the green light to pitch in games again after throwing a live batting practice session over the weekend and a bullpen on Tuesday. Because of the fact that the 27-year-old southpaw has been on the injured list since the middle of June, he's likely going to need at least a couple of rehab starts, which means he probably won't be able to make more than one or two starts in the big leagues to close out the season. Fantasy managers can't be expecting much from Garrett the rest of the way, especially since he's made only seven starts in 2024. In those seven starts, he posted a 5.35 ERA (3.83 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP with 34 strikeouts and only four walks in 37 innings.
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett (forearm) played catch before Wednesday's game against the visiting Cincinnati Reds in Miami as he builds up in his throwing program. Garrett said he's about a week and a half away from beginning to throw bullpen sessions. He was placed on the injured list on June 23 after he was scratched from his scheduled start due to a left forearm flexor strain, and Garrett isn't expected to rejoin Miami's rotation until sometime in September. The 26-year-old southpaw owns a 5.35 ERA and 1.19 WHIP to go with a sharp 34:4 K:BB this season, but he's difficult to stash in fantasy leagues without a whole lot of time remaining to make an impact.
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett (forearm), who has been playing catch in Jupiter, Florida, was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. He was originally placed on the IL on June 23 after getting scratched from his scheduled start due to a left forearm flexor strain, and he'll now be out through mid-August with the move. 2024 is shaping up as an injury-ruined year for Garrett, who has been limited to 37 innings (seven starts) for the Marlins while yielding a 5.35 ERA and 1.19 WHIP to go with a tidy 34:4 K:BB this season. By the time the 26-year-old southpaw begins a minor-league rehab assignment, the last-place Fish will not have much incentive to bring him back in any capacity this year. After being one of fantasy's breakout stars of 2023, Garrett is fairly safe to drop in all leagues without much time remaining to be a factor for those who were still holding on.
