Miami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers, who has been long-tossing for the last few weeks, is 20 pounds lighter this offseason. The 25-year-old has adopted a Keto diet due to his high-insulin resistance. Weathers missed three months in 2024 with a left index-finger strain, but before that he was looking good with a 3.55 ERA in his first 13 starts. The young southpaw returned late in the year to make three starts in September and will be full healthy heading into the 2025 campaign. Following the trade of lefty Jesus Luzardo to the Philadelphia Phillies, Weathers will undoubtedly be counted on in the Marlins starting rotation behind right-hander Sandy Alcantara. Pitching in Miami is not the most attractive circumstances at all, but Weathers has some late-round flier appeal in fantasy going into 2025 after setting career-best strikeout and walk rates in 2024.

Weathers is coming off five scoreless innings in a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville. Wednesday's start will be his first game action in the big leagues since June 7, so he'll be a shaky fantasy streamer with a likely short leash in terms of his pitch count. The matchup against the first-place Dodgers is another reason to fade Weathers in his return to Miami. Before his finger injury, the former seventh overall pick by the San Diego Padres in 2018 had a solid 3.55 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP, 67 strikeouts and 20 walks in his first full year with the Fish. He had a quality start in his lone start against LA on May 8, when he allowed three earned runs with one walk and three K's in six innings pitched.

Weathers was moved to the 60-day injured list on July 7 to clear space on the team's 40-man roster while he recovers from a left index-finger strain. Barring a setback on his rehab assignment, Weathers is expected to return to Miami's starting rotation in the middle of September. The 24-year-old southpaw has been out since early June, so he figures to need at least one more rehab start before the big-league club is comfortable activating him. Weathers, a former first-rounder, had a 3.55 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 67 strikeouts in 71 innings over 13 starts earlier this year before his injury. He's most likely only going to make a start or two for the Marlins down the stretch.
