Phillies Claim Brett de Geus Off Waivers From Marlins

The Philadelphia Phillies claimed right-hander Brett de Geus off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday and optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. de Geus spent the 2024 season with three different teams -- the Seattle Mariners, Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays -- and will now head to his fourth different team since January. The 27-year-old will merely be organizational relief depth for the Phillies for the time being and isn't on the fantasy radar at all. He was originally a 33rd-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017 out of Cabrillo College. de Geus made his major-league debut with the Texas Rangers in 2021 and also pitched with the Arizona Diamondbacks that year. In parts of two big-league seasons with five different teams, he has a 7.48 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in 61 1/3 relief frames.

Miami Designates Brett de Geus For Assignment

The Miami Marlins have designated right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus for assignment. In a corresponding move, the Marlins promoted right-handed pitcher Xzavion Curry from Triple-A Jacksonville. de Geus tossed one inning at Triple-A and allowed five hits and one earned run. He will now pass through waivers and will lose his spot on the 40-man roster. Last season, de Geus logged 11 1/3 innings in the majors and posted a 7.15 ERA with a 1.59 WHIP. He tallied just seven strikeouts. During the 2023 campaign, the 27-year-old tossed a career-high 50 innings but posted a similar 7.56 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP. Fantasy managers should not expect the right-hander to draw much interest in waivers, given his previous performances in the majors.

Marlins Option Valente Bellozo, Brett de Geus

The Miami Marlins optioned right-handed pitchers Valente Bellozo and Brett de Geus to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday and reassigned right-hander Josh Ekness to minor-league camp. Bellozo lost out on the competition for a starting-rotation spot in camp by giving up 10 runs in 8 1/3 innings of work in the Grapefruit League. To begin the season, the 25-year-old Mexican hurler will serve as starting depth in the minors. Bellozo made his big-league debut in 2024 and went 3-4 with a 3.67 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 44 K's and 21 walks in 68 2/3 innings over 13 starts for the Fish. The 27-year-old de Geus also didn't perform well in spring training, getting hit around to the tune of six runs in just 2 2/3 innings in the Grapefruit League. de Geus spent 2024 with three different teams and had an ERA above 7.00 in just 11 1/3 inning. He'll open in the minor as relief depth for Miami.
