The Los Angeles Angels placed infielder Anthony Rendon (back) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 27) on Tuesday with lower-back inflammation and recalled infielder Michael Stefanic from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Rendon was only able to play in 14 games for the Halos after coming off the IL in early July following a three-month absence due to a hamstring strain. The 34-year-old will be eligible to come off the IL this time around on Aug. 6, but given his lengthy injury history and reputation as a slow healer, we wouldn't be surprised if his absence extends beyond that. Luis Rengifo is making the start at the hot corner on Tuesday against the visiting Colorado Rockies and is likely to split time at the position with Brandon Drury for the foreseeable future. Not only can Rendon not stay healthy anymore, but he's hitting .227 (29-for-128) this year and has yet to homer.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon is not in the team's starting lineup for Wednesday's series finale on the road in Seattle against the division-rival Mariners. With Rendon retreating to the bench for this one, Luis Rengifo will start at the hot corner and will bat second for the Halos versus Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo. It's an odd day for Rendon to get a day off, as he's hitting .417 with a 1.588 OPS, two home runs and three RBI in 12 career at-bats against Castillo. Rengifo, on the other hand, has hit .294 with a 1.118 OPS, three home runs and four RBI in 17 career at-bats against Castillo. Willie Calhoun is the designated hitter and will bat cleanup. In 12 games since returning from the injured list on July 8, the disappointing Rendon has gone 8-for-45 (.178) with two doubles, three RBI, 11 strikeouts and one steal in 50 plate appearances.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon (hamstring) has been activated off the 60-day injured list on Monday. Rendon will make his return to the lineup after missing the last two and a half months due to a lingering hamstring issue. He'll bat leadoff and cover third base versus right-hander Jon Gray on Monday. Rendon might be able to offer value in deeper mixed leagues, assuming he actually stays healthy. In a corresponding move, third baseman Miguel Sano has been designated for assignment after a fairly sluggish start to his season.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon (hamstring) could return to the diamond as early as Monday, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Angles skipper Ron Washington addressed the media on Sunday, July 7 and said that the 34-year-old faced live pitching over the weekend and plans to rotate him between the designated hitter spot and the hot corner until he is ready for full-time duties on defense. Rendon was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 21 due to a high-grade partial tear in his left hamstring. He was then moved to the 60-day injured list in May. During the early part of the campaign, the former World Series Champion held a .267/.325/.307 line with zero home runs and three stolen bases in 19 games. Rendon is worth a look in most standard leagues, as he should be penciled in the starting nine every day upon his return.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon (hamstring) is scheduled for live at-bats against minor-league pitchers on Friday and Saturday at Angel Stadium. Rendon could get anywhere from 15 to 20 at-bats each day. Despite having not played in a game since suffering a left-hamstring strain on April 20, it sounds like the Angels are considering activating the 34-year-old veteran from the injured list next week before the club heads to the All-Star break. The Halos are in even more need of infield help after just placing Luis Rengifo (wrist) on the IL on Friday. Still, Rendon will probably be eased back into action at the big-league level when he returns because of how long he's been out. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can probably wait and see on Rendon after he hit .267 (20-for-75) with no homers and only three RBI earlier this year before getting hurt yet again.
