Red Sox Could Get Something Done With Jordan Montgomery

The Boston Red Sox remain in play to sign free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery, as one National League executive said on Sunday that "we hear the Red Sox and Scott Boras had a good meeting recently and may get some deal eventually done on Jordan Montgomery." The 31-year-old southpaw hasn't found a team that is willing to meet his contractual demands yet this offseason after helping the Texas Rangers win the World Series last fall. In 32 combined starts with Texas and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2023, he went 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 48 walks and a career-high 166 strikeouts in 188 2/3 regular-season innings. Boston could definitely use the rotation help, but a move to the demanding American League East wouldn't be the best landing spot for Montgomery, who lacks true upside in fantasy due to his lack of swing-and-miss stuff.

Yuki Matsui Day-To-Day With Back Inflammation

San Diego Padres left-hander Yuki Matsui's (back) MRI exam showed inflammation but no structural damage in his back, according to manager Mike Shildt. Matsui is considered day-to-day. Matsui was scratched from spring training action over the weekend due to tightness in his back, but it appears the injury isn't very serious. It's unclear when the 28-year-old southpaw reliever will appear in another Cactus League game, though, after he was impressive in striking out the side in his inning of work in the spring training opener last Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. If Matsui is anywhere close to as dominant this year as he was in his Cactus League opener, he'll be in the mix for saves in San Diego in his first year in the big leagues.

Extension Unlikely For Royce Lewis Right Now

Minnesota Twins third baseman Royce Lewis is open to a contract extension with the team, but as of right now, that is looking unlikely to happen. The first overall pick in 2017 is a client of agent Scott Boras, but Lewis said he'd be "an idiot" to not listen if the Twins wanted to discuss a long-term deal. Lewis had a breakout 2023 after missing two years with a torn ACL in his right knee. The Twins are in the midst of trimming payroll, potentially up to a $30 million reduction from last year. The 24-year-old is under team control through 2028, too, so the Twins are in no rush. He hit .309/.372/.548 with a .921 OPS, 15 home runs, 52 RBI and six stolen bases in just 58 games for Minnesota in 2023 and is now firmly a top-10 fantasy third baseman heading into the 2024 campaign, although he does come with considerable injury risk.

Hunter Renfroe Dealing With Lower-Back Tightness

Kansas City Royals outfielder Hunter Renfroe (back) has been dealing with some lower-back tightness in camp, according to manager Matt Quatraro, which is why he hasn't appeared in a Cactus League game yet. Renfroe will take part in the team's workout on Monday, though, and he's scheduled to make his spring training debut on Wednesday. Quatraro said there is no concern about Renfroe's availability. The 32-year-old right-handed-hitting veteran should be fine for Opening Day in late March and is projected to serve as Kansas City's starting right fielder in 2024 after signing a two-year deal with the club in free agency in the offseason. Renfroe didn't square the ball up often in 2023 despite managing to hit 20 home runs in 140 games. Outside of being a decent source of power, Renfroe shouldn't excite fantasy managers all that much in mixed leagues at this stage.

Jasson Dominguez Takes Swings Off Tee Monday

New York Yankees rookie outfielder Jasson Dominguez (elbow) took 20 swings off a tee on Monday in camp, his first time swinging a bat since having Tommy John surgery in September of last year. Dominguez expects to do the same thing again on Wednesday. Up to this point, the 21-year-old outfielder had only been shagging fly balls in the outfield. It's a good step for The Martian, but he has a long ways to go in his recovery from elbow surgery and isn't expected to make his 2024 debut until later this summer. Still, Dominguez is one of the most intriguing outfield prospects in the game and deserves to be stashed in mixed leagues for his power/speed combination. When healthy, he is expected to be New York's starting center fielder.
