Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery will shift to the bullpen going forward. The D-Backs made Montgomery the odd man out with six healthy starters right now. The left-hander has been awful to the tune of a 6.44 ERA with a 67/36 K/BB ratio across 19 starts this season. Before this season, Montgomery had a solid track record over multiple seasons. The 2024 campaign is by far his worst of his professional career. The D-Backs will give the starting spot to Ryne Nelson who will take the mound against the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Nelson has posted quality starts in each of his last two outings, so he should be worth a look as a streaming option for Friday's slate.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed on Monday that left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) will return from the 15-day injured list for the middle game of the series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday. Montgomery has been working his way back since experiencing right-knee soreness on June 29, and he landed on the IL with inflammation in his right patellar tendon. After signing with the Snakes late, Montgomery has not been good, compiling a 6-5 record with a 6.44 ERA over 65 2/3 innings. Not only are the Royals a bad first matchup back from the IL for the 31-year-old southpaw, but he also didn't go on a minor-league rehab assignment. The former fourth-round pick of the New York Yankees out of South Carolina in 2014 has never been a big strikeout guy but currently has a career-low 15.1% K rate.

It remains to be seen what day exactly Montgomery will make his return to Arizona's starting rotation, but fantasy managers are probably going to want to avoid the struggling 31-year-old southpaw, especially if his first start off the IL comes against the upstart Royals. Montgomery has not been effective in the desert with a 6.44 ERA in his 13 starts in 2024 and has been out since late June with right-knee inflammation.
