Marcell Ozuna Gets Base Knock Against Phillies

Atlanta Braves designated hitter Marcell Ozuna went 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored in his team's 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. The veteran also walked and struck out once. It's taking Ozuna a bit to get going in 2025, as he's batting just .241 with two extra-base hits (one double, one homer) across his first 29 at-bats -- scoring seven runs and driving in five. Still, it's worth noting that he's walking 32.6% of the time, notching at least one base on balls in all but two of his appearances. The exit velocity numbers look good for the 34-year-old, as his 93.2 MPH exceeds his 2024 average of 92.1. It isn't time to panic just yet. Ozuna should begin to heat up along with the weather.

Emilio Pagan Locks Down Save Chance

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Emilio Pagan recorded his second save in Tuesday's 1-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. He did not allow a hit or a free pass and needed just seven pitches (six strikes) to close out their National League opponents. Pagan is now 2-for-2 on save chances with three strikeouts and a 0.40 WHIP over his first five appearances -- allowing a single hit and no runs in five innings. Teammate Tony Santillan has also picked up a save in the early going, but it appears Pagan will get most of the opportunities for now. It's also worth mentioning that fellow bullpen arm Graham Ashcraft could eventually be in line for some save chances. He has yet to allow a run in his 5.1 innings and was rumored to be working his way toward high-leverage situations late last month.

Dylan Cease Torched By Oakland For Nine Earned Runs

San Diego Padres pitcher Dylan Cease allowed nine hits and nine earned runs over four innings pitched in Tuesday's 10-4 road loss to the Athletics. The 29-year-old struck out four and handed out three free passes, falling to 1-1 on the season. Most of the damage against him came in the first inning, as the A's nickeled and dimed him with singles and doubles en route to six runs. Cease settled in for an inning or so after that, but another three-run Oakland outburst in the third put the Padres down 9-4, and they could never regain any ground. The former sixth-round pick holds a bloated 7.98 ERA and 1.57 WHIP through three starts (14 2/3 innings) with an 18:6 K:BB. Cease pitched well in his first two starts and he'll look for better results in his next one, which is tentatively slated for the following Monday at home against the Cubs.

Kyle Schwarber Homers, Triples In Loss To Braves

Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber went 3-for-3 with a home run and a triple in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. He drove in three runs, scored twice, and drew a walk in the contest. Schwarber had another two hard-hit balls in this one -- both off Braves pitcher Chris Sale. His triple was a 105.1 MPH laser that bounced off the base of the right-center-field wall. Then, he blasted a Sale four-seam fastball 462 feet at 116.7 MPH over the right field wall in the top of the fifth inning. The 32-year-old has been blistering at the dish, batting .324 (12-for-37) with one double, one triple, and five homers -- tying him for second in the MLB.

Brenton Doyle Homers In Second Straight Game

Colorado Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle went 1-for-3 with a home run in Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. The 26-year-old also walked and struck out once while stealing his first base of the season. Doyle was the Rockies' only offense on a day when they struck out more times (14) than they got hits (5) and were held hitless past the seventh inning. He's been solid in the early going, holding a respectable .273 batting average with two long balls, two doubles, and one theft. While it'd be nice to see him walk a bit more (6.4%), the Shepherd University alum has cut his strikeout rate for a second consecutive season to an efficient 17.0%.
