Detroit Tigers outfielder Ryan Kreidler has made the team's Opening Day roster, sources tell the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. Kreidler beat out Justyn-Henry Malloy for one of the final roster spots, and he could see some playing time early on in 2025 with both Parker Meadows (arm) and Wenceel Perez (back) on the injured list to start the season. The 27-year-old was initially optioned to Triple-A Toledo but will now rejoin the big-league squad because of injuries to both Meadows and Perez. The right-handed hitter bounced between the majors and minors again in 2024 and went 7-for-59 (.119) with a homer, two RBI, five stolen bases and 19 strikeouts in 35 games over 65 plate appearances. Kreidler didn't fare much better at Toledo, leaving little hope that he'll suddenly catch fire for those in AL-only formats early on this year. His greatest asset to the Tigers is his ability to basically play all over the diamond.

The Baltimore Sun's Matt Weyrich reports that Baltimore Orioles infielder Jorge Mateo (elbow) is not included on the team's Opening Day roster and doesn't have a locker in the clubhouse at Rogers Centre for the game on Thursday versus the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays. Mateo was always seen as doubtful to be ready for Opening Day after having UCL reconstruction on his elbow last August. Until the 29-year-old is ready to rejoin Baltimore's active roster, Livan Soto will serve as a utility infielder for the O's. Mateo led the league with 35 stolen bases in 2022 and also stole 32 bags in 2023, but he'll be relegated to a bench role whenever he's fully healthy, giving him very little fantasy appeal. In 68 games in 2024 in his third full year with the team, he hit .229/.267/.401 with five homers, 18 RBI, 13 steals and 30 runs scored in 208 plate appearances.

The Cincinnati Reds designated outfielder Stuart Fairchild for assignment on Wednesday, per The Cincinnati Enquirer's Charlie Goldsmith. Even with Austin Hays (calf) opening the year on the injured list, Fairchild is the odd man out in Cincy's outfield to begin the year after both Blake Dunn and Jacob Hurtubise made the Opening Day roster. The move comes after Fairchild hit just .132 (5-for-38) with two doubles, two RBI, two stolen bases and 13 strikeouts in 45 plate appearances over 21 Cactus League games this spring. The 29-year-old also hit just .215/.286/.368 with a .654 OPS, eight home runs, 30 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 94 games in 2024 in his second full season with the team. He has been a below-average hitter in his four MLB seasons, but he does have speed and can play pretty much anywhere in the outfield, so he should attract interest from outfield-needy teams on waivers.

Detroit Tigers first baseman/designated hitter Spencer Torkelson, the former No. 1 overall pick, has made the team's Opening Day roster, sources tell the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. Torkelson, who has so far been a disappointment for the Tigers despite hitting 31 homers and driving in 94 runs in 2023, will open the 2025 season on the big-league roster after slashing .340/.389/.680 with a 1.07 OPS, two doubles, five home runs, 11 RBI and a stolen base in 19 Grapefruit League games. Not only is the 25-year-old right-handed power bat on the Opening Day roster, but he figures to open the season as Detroit's primary designated hitter with Kerry Carpenter being needed full time in the outfield. After an impressive 2023 campaign, Torkelson's hard-hit numbers plunged and his strikeout rate went back up in 2024. The power is there, but he will need to perform and make more contact in order to keep regular playing time.

New York Mets infielder Brett Baty has made the team's Opening Day roster, according to the New York Daily News' Abbey Mastracco. The 25-year-old former top prospect made it a no-brainer move for the Mets to carry him on the big-league roster to open the year after he hit .353 (18-for-51) with four home runs, six doubles, a triple, 11 RBI and a stolen base in 20 Grapefruit League games. Mark Vientos is locked in at third base after his breakout season in 2024, but with Jeff McNeil (oblique) opening the season on the injured list, Baty is in line to be in the strong side of a platoon at second base with Luisangel Acuna. If Baty continues to hit well in the early going, the Mets could have a decision on their hands when McNeil is ready to return. So far, Baty has struggled offensively in 169 big-league games, slashing .215/.282/.325 with a .607 OPS, 15 homers and 55 RBI.
