Jason Foley Optioned To Triple-A

The Detroit Tigers optioned right-handed reliever Jason Foley to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold reports. Entering spring training, Foley was in the mix to save games for the Tigers to open the 2025 season, but that will have to be put on hold after he really struggled in spring training. The 29-year-old posted a 6.14 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while allowing five earned runs on 10 hits (one homer) with no walks and 10 strikeouts in 7 1/3 Grapefruit League innings. Foley led the Tigers with 28 saves a year ago, so he'll no doubt be back with the big club eventually after he irons out some issues in the minors. But with Foley starting on the farm, the Tigers will now look to some combination of Beau Brieske, Tyler Holton, Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest to close out games in the back of the bullpen. It's a messy situation for fantasy managers to navigate.

Richie Palacios Placed On 10-Day Injured List

Tampa Bay Rays infielder/outfielder Richie Palacios (finger) was placed on the 10-day injured list. Earlier in camp, Palacios was diagnosed with a small fracture in his right ring finger. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as Palacios was likely going to have a utility role in the starting lineup. Last season, the 27-year-old posted a .223/.346/.318 slash line with five home runs and 19 stolen bases across 92 contests. He generated a modest .325 xwOBA with a .249 xBA. Palacios also drew walks at an elite 14.2 percent walk rate. Last summer, Palacios only entered the starting lineup against right-handed pitching and logged 37 starts at the keystone, two at the hot corner, one at shortstop, and 51 in the outfield. While he is sidelined, Jose Caballero and Taylor Walls will have an increased role in the infield, and Kameron Misner could have a larger role in the outfield.

Shane McClanahan Hits 15-Day Injured List

The Tampa Bay Rays have placed left-handed pitcher Shane McClanahan (triceps) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday. McClanahan suffered this injury during his spring training start on Saturday afternoon. He left the contest early in pain after throwing a pitch. After the contest, he was diagnosed with a nerve-related injury and was not given a definitive timetable. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring his status, but should not expect him back on the mound soon. As a result, this will open a spot in the starting rotation for Drew Rasmussen, who was not guaranteed a spot in the rotation. McClanahan was working his way back from Tommy John surgery. He was unable to pitch at all in 2024. In the 2023 season, the southpaw posted a 3.29 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP. He is still worth stashing in all formats as he will carry high strikeout upside when he returns.

Mookie Betts Plans To Play On Opening Day

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder/outfielder Mookie Betts (illness) expects to play on Opening Day. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reported that Betts needed to get through Tuesday's contest before committing. He started at shortstop and did not face any setbacks during the contest. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring his status, but it appears the 32-year-old will be in the starting nine on Thursday when the Dodgers host the Detroit Tigers. Last season, Betts posted a stellar .289/.372/.491 slash line with 24 doubles, 19 home runs, and 16 stolen bases. He generated an elite .356 xwOBA and .282 xBA, which placed him in the 90th and 92nd percentile, respectively. He also posted an excellent 11.0 percent strikeout rate and an 11.8 percent walk rate. When healthy, he will likely bat in the two-hole behind Shohei Ohtani.

Spencer Steer Will Play On Opening Day

Cincinnati Reds first baseman/outfielder Spencer Steer (shoulder) will be active on Opening Day. Earlier in camp, the Reds said that Steer would open the campaign on the injured list. However, he was able to progress and will not miss the start of the campaign. However, starting left fielder Austin Hays (calf) will instead be placed on the 10-day injured list. During camp, Steer has played exclusively as a designated hitter, which suggests he will not be able to play in the field at the start of the season. Last summer, Steer appeared in 158 contests and posted a .225/.319/.402 slash line with 20 home runs and 25 stolen bases. Under the hood, he generated a modest .315 xwOBA with a low .235 xBA. However, he placed in the 73rd percentile in sprint speed. Fantasy managers should expect the 27-year-old to have an everyday spot in the lineup and does carry a high-floor in category formats given his ability to hit for power and steal bases.
