The Tennessee Titans lost TE Jonnu Smith in free agency, but they held on to his backup, re-signing Anthony Firkser to a one-year deal Wednesday, per NFL writer Paul Kuharsky.

Firkser signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and spent time on the Jets and Chiefs practice squads before joining the Titans in 2018. He served as Smith’s backup in 2020, playing all 16 games and catching 39 passes for 387 yards. In Week 6 with Smith out, Firkser had his best career game, catching 8-of-9 targets for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Titans re-up Anthony Firkser for another year
Fantasy slant: With Smith and Corey Davis leaving in free agency, for now, Firkser files in behind A.J. Brown as the second receiving option for the Titans. Tennessee is likely to add another pass catcher either in the draft or free agency this offseason. They still have four picks inside the top 101 selections and $23.3 million in cap space. The tight end will still be a featured part of this passing game. Last season, Tennessee ranked third in target share (30.5%) to the position. It's also worth noting that new offensive coordinator Todd Downing previously served as the team’s tight end coach for the last two seasons. — Derek Brown
