Jake Haener The Favorite For Backup QB Job

New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler has an uphill climb to earn backup duties to veteran Derek Carr in his rookie season, which is why Jake Haener currently looks to be the favorite to be second on the QB depth chart out of training camp this summer. At the very least, though, Rattler is going to be in competition for the No. 2 spot with Haener. There are other veterans on the roster as well in Kellen Mond and Nathan Peterman, and Taysom Hill can't be ruled out for getting some work under center in camp, either. Rattler's growth could be tied to how quickly he can learn the offensive lingo and installs. Haener had a leg up last year since he ran a version of the Saints' offense at the Senior Bowl the previous season. Rattler might have to sit on the bench for a few years, so he's only worth drafting in dynasty/keeper leagues this fall.

Spencer Rattler Falls To The Saints In Round Five

The New Orleans Saints selected South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler with the No. 150 pick in the fifth round on Saturday of the 2024 NFL Draft. The drought is over as a new quarterback record of 138 picks between selections of Bo Nix (12th overall) and Rattler. The 23-year-old slipped further in drafts than anticipated and ended up in New Orleans. He had a 99.1 passing rating, averaging 7.9 yards per attempt with a 19:8 TD: INT ratio for South Carolina in 2023. Some of Rattler's strengths are that he has a solid pocket presence and excellent footwork. Rattler will compete for a chance to back up starter Derek Carr, but the rookie QB is mainly an option in dynasty leagues heading into 2024 fantasy drafts.

Spencer Rattler Could Be Selected In Round 2

Former Oklahoma and South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler was once viewed as a potential first-round pick after being a five-star recruit in the high-school class of 2019. His career did not go as expected, but he's thought to be the next-best quarterback on the board in the 2024 NFL draft. The first round saw six signal-callers selected in the top 12 picks, and any other teams looking to take a flyer on a quarterback likely have Rattler on their radar. The Around The NFL staff at NFL.com expects the 23-year-old to be selected in Round 3, but the run of quarterbacks on Day 1 could push him up to Round 2. Rattler threw for 10,807 yards, 77 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 48 games with the Sooners and Gamecocks.

Giants Visit With Bo Nix, Spencer Rattler

The New York Giants visited with Oregon quarterback Bo Nix and South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler this week, according to sources. The Giants continue to do their due diligence on the QB position ahead of this month's NFL draft at all levels of the draft. Nix is a potential first-round pick, but he's not expected to go as early as New York's sixth overall pick. Rattler is seen as a mid-round selection. The G-Men have six picks in this year's draft with one in every round other than the seventh. They continue to say that Daniel Jones (knee), who is coming off a torn ACL, is their starter when healthy, but they are wisely planning to have better depth behind him in 2024 and beyond if he gets hurt again or disappoints this fall.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire Staying Put In Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs are re-signing running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to a one-year deal, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Edwards-Helaire became a free agent this offseason, and the Chiefs hosted J.K. Dobbins on a visit on Tuesday, but CEH is back with the team for the 2024 season. Since being selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Edwards-Helaire has rushed 441 times for 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has also hauled in 89 passes for 765 yards and seven receiving scores. Ultimately, the LSU product has been a bust, but he's a fine backup running back to Isiah Pacheco. Like last season, Edwards-Helaire should be viewed as nothing more than a handcuff RB in 2024 fantasy drafts.
