NFL rookie wide receivers are one of the best available stock investments. They are often slow to assimilate to a professional offense, but the have the unique ability to generate a late-season impact. Amidst a ton of intriguing rookie wide receiver prospects, there is one 22-year-old wideout who sits atop my investment portfolio.
Washington’s Jahan Dotson.
Price History: Jahan Dotson
Playing alongside current NFL players such as K.J. Hamler, Pat Freiermuth and Juwan Johnson, Dotson struggled to display his immense talent during his first two collegiate seasons at Penn State. His breakout year came as a junior, where Dotson earned a 28.3% target share in nine games with the Nittany Lions.
Dotson improved in every major receiving category throughout his college, reaching 91 receptions, 1,182 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior season. He was selected by Washington in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft with the 16th overall pick. Dotson’s price on Mojo hovered around $11.15 entering the summer.
Starting in June, the excitement for his future started to grow. Dotson quickly gained a reputation as one of Washington’s best offensive players, specifically cited for his superb route-running and hands. Dotson shined during OTAs and minicamp, and quickly earned a spot with the first-team offense in training camp. His price at Mojo was a modest $11.60 entering the 2022 season.
Dotson Making an Immediate Impact
While still behind Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel on the team depth chart, Dotson has already shown the ability to make big plays. His 14.1 yards per catch rank second on the team to McLaurin. He has caught seven of 10 targets and leads Washington with three receiving touchdowns.
Dotson’s 4.43 speed has been utilized by quarterback Carson Wentz, targeting the rookie on the sixth-most deep targets of any NFL wideout this season. The Commanders have deployed Dotson on every possible pass play, reaching 100% route participation (PlayerProfiler). The chemistry between the quarterback and his young wideout is illustrated by Wentz’s 141.3 QB rating when targeting Dotson.
2022 Season Projection
The Washington defense has struggled mightily to start the season, allowing an average of 29 points per game to below-average opponents in Jacksonville and Detroit. This lends itself to consistent high-scoring battles, which should provide repeated opportunity for Dotson to produce. Both McLaurin and Samuel have displayed trouble staying healthy, leaving the door open for a Dotson ascension to an increased target share.
Despite competing with a talented rookie class, Dotson is currently among the betting favorites for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. His odds are currently +800 at DraftKings Sportsbook, second only to Atlanta wideout Drake London.
Dotson’s Mojo price spiked to a career-high $12.15 last week and is currently trading at $11.98. His price is currently lower than Detroit wideout Jameson Williams, who was drafted just four spots before him, and has yet to catch an NFL pass. Even if Dotson only reaches London’s current value ($15.22) by season’s end, that would equate to a robust 27% value increase.
Summary
Rookie wide receivers carry huge investment upside at Mojo. Finding an ascending talent with a strong projected target share is the perfect combination for an ideal investment. Jahan Dotson could be the most talented wide receiver in this rookie class, yet he is only the sixth-most expensive rookie wideout at Mojo. If you combine college production, athleticism and early NFL impact, Dotson’s future is an attractive investment.
Dotson’s projects for at least a $1-2 increase during this season, equating to an 8% to 16% ROI. If an injury were to limit McLaurin or Samuel in any way, the Penn State rookie receiver could be one of the biggest movers in the 2022 Mojo Market.
