Free-agent right-hander Marcus Stroman and the New York Yankees are in agreement on a two-year deal that includes an option for a third year. The deal averages $18.5 million per season. The 32-year-old was an All-Star with the Chicago Cubs last year for the second time in his career and finished by going 10-9 with a 3.95 ERA (3.58 FIP) and 1.26 WHIP with 52 walks and 119 strikeouts over 136 2/3 innings covering his 27 appearances (25 starts). Stroman had a great first half with the Cubbies before dealing with injuries and struggling down the stretch. He became a free agent when he opted out of his $21 million option in Chicago for 2024. Injuries are to be expected, but when healthy, Stroman has been solid for fantasy managers in recent seasons and should slot into New York's starting rotation right behind ace Gerrit Cole and lefty Carlos Rodon.
The New York Yankees have emerged as the top suitor for free-agent pitcher Marcus Stroman. It was recently reported that the right-hander had reached out to express his interest in joining the club, but no official contract offer had been tabled. A 2023 All-Star, Stroman worked to a 3.95 ERA across 27 outings (25 starts) last season, but his season was cut short due to rib and hip injuries. It was the seventh time in parts of nine big-league seasons Stroman posted a sub-4.00 ERA, while he's now done so in each of his last four campaigns. The Yankees haven't done much to upgrade their starting pitching behind Gerrit Cole this offseason and also lost significant pitching depth in the trade that brought in outfielder Juan Soto from the Padres. Stroman would be a solid No. 2 asset for the Bronx Bombers.
The New York Yankees and free-agent pitcher Marcus Stroman reportedly have mutual interest. Stroman has reached out to the club and has let them know he is interesting in signing with them, but there has not been a contract offer from the Yankees at this time. The veteran remains one of the better free-agent starting pitching options available on the open market but is a tier below the likes of reigning Cy Young winner Blake Snell and former Yankee Jordan Montgomery. Stroman is coming off a solid season that saw him post a 3.95 ERA across 27 outings (25 starts), while he is the owner of a career 3.65 ERA in 231 appearances in the majors. The Yankees are looking to add to their rotation behind ace Gerrit Cole, who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2023.
