Reds Acquire Jose Trevino From Yankees

The Cincinnati Reds acquired catcher Jose Trevino from the New York Yankees on Friday night in exchange for right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson, according to sources. Trevino was the primary backup for Austin Wells in the Bronx in 2024 and slashed a weak .215/.288/.354 with eight home runs and 28 RBI in 234 plate appearances in the regular season. The 32-year-old veteran backstop will now head to Cincinnati, where he'll once again be in a backup role, this time behind Tyler Stephenson. His backup role won't provide him much fantasy value, if any at all, heading into the 2025 campaign. The former sixth-round pick by the Texas Rangers in 2014 out of Oral Roberts University carries a .236/.275/.362 career slash line with a .637 OPS and only 32 home runs in 399 games over seven MLB seasons.

Jose Trevino Expected To Return Friday

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that catcher Jose Trevino (quadriceps) is set to return from the 10-day injured list on Friday, but Austin Wells will continue to get the bulk of the playing time behind the dish. Trevino recently started a minor-league rehab assignment and didn't have any setbacks with a Grade 2 left-quadriceps strain that has kept him out of action in the Bronx since the middle of July. The 31-year-old veteran backstop went 2-for-8 with Double-A Somerset in three rehab games and will return to a .244/.303/.411 slash line when he rejoins the Yankees this weekend. Trevino has added eight home runs and 27 RBI in his 59 games in his third year in New York, but his fantasy appeal is limited to deep two-catcher leagues while he works behind Wells.

Jose Trevino To Start Rehab Assignment On Sunday

New York Yankees catcher Jose Trevino (quadriceps) will start a minor-league rehab assignment on Sunday. Trevino will start playing in minor-league games and could be ready to rejoin the Yankees sometime late next week/weekend. The 31-year-old veteran backstop has been sidelined for four weeks due to a Grade 2 left-quadriceps strain. With Trevino out, the Yankees have been rolling with a catching combination of Austin Wells (the starter) and Carlos Narvaez backing him up. Wells has been the more intriguing fantasy option in the Bronx, but Trevino hasn't been a slouch with a .244 average (41-for-168) with eight home runs and 27 runs driven in over 186 trips to the plate. When Trevino is given the green light to come off the 10-day injured list, Narvaez will become expendable.
