Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe and outfielder Aaron Hicks will both start on the bench for Thursday's series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays. It's not surprise that O'Hoppe is out for the day game following a night game. Matt Thaiss is doing the catching and batting fifth, while Mickey Moniak is in right field and batting sixth against Rays right-hander Ryan Pepiot. Neither Thaiss nor Moniak have faced Pepiot in their careers. O'Hoppe has been very hot to start the year, going 18-for-53 (.340) with two home runs and seven RBI in his first 16 games, while Hicks has been the opposite, going 7-for-44 (.159) with a homer and four RBI in his first 13 games with the Halos. Hicks has started just one of the team's last four games and is losing fantasy value quickly in AL-only leagues.
Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe, third baseman Anthony Rendon and first baseman Nolan Schanuel are all on the bench on Wednesday versus the Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Zack Littell. Matt Thaiss is catching and batting eighth, Miguel Sano is at third base and hitting fifth, and Brandon Drury is at first base and batting in the six-hole for the Halos. Luis Rengifo is also at the keystone and hitting leadoff on Wednesday. Rengifo will gain some DFS appeal in this one while hitting atop the order. The 27-year-old Venezuelan infielder has been the odd-man out on the Angels' infield so far early this year, but he's been good when active, going 8-for-22 (.364) with two doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases in 23 plate appearances.
Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe hit his first home run of the year on Friday, a game-tying grand slam in the sixth inning of an eventual 8-6 loss to the Red Sox. O'Hoppe finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. The 24-year-old is off to a hot start, going 9-for-20 (.450) with a double, a triple, a home run, six RBI, four runs scored, and a 3:4 BB:K. This is just what fantasy managers were hoping for when they drafted him for upside at a traditionally offensively-challenged position. Earlier this year, manager Ron Washington stated he wanted to get O'Hoppe 125-135 starts at catcher, but he could get even more if some days at DH were sprinkled in too. The youngster hit 14 home runs last season in just 51 games with a 15.6% Barrel%, so a big year could certainly be in store for him.
Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe is getting his first day off on Monday as the team takes on the Miami Marlins. O'Hoppe started each of the team's first three games over the weekend and went 3-for-7 with an RBI, run scored and two walks. The 24-year-old will be the Angels' primary catcher throughout the season, barring injury. With O'Hoppe getting his first breather of 2024, Matt Thaiss will get the nod behind the dish on Monday and hit seventh versus Marlins right-hander Max Meyer. Thaiss will merely be a low-upside sleeper in DFS on Monday in his first start of the year. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting backstop hit .214/.319/.340 with a career-high nine home runs and 31 RBI in 95 games for the Angels last season.
Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington said that he'd like to see catcher Logan O'Hoppe catch roughly 125 to 135 games this year. The Angels are fully expecting O'Hoppe to be their regular backstop in 2024 despite the fact that he missed almost four months in 2023 with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Still, the offensive upside is very intriguing for fantasy managers in single-catcher setups, as O'Hoppe managed to club 14 long balls and drive in 29 runs in only 199 plate appearances over 51 games in 2023. Nine of the 24-year-old's home runs came in the final month of the season. Because of his weak defensive skills, O'Hoppe could eventually become a full-time designated hitter, but for now, he has top-12 upside at the weak catcher position for his power alone.
