The Boston Red Sox recently had a zoom meeting with free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery. He would represent an upgrade for Boston's starting rotation in 2024 and potentially beyond if he's signed to a long-term deal. The Red Sox have the payroll flexibility to do it, but it's unclear if they'll pull the trigger. Outside of Blake Snell, Montgomery is the best starting pitcher still available on the free-agent market. The 31-year-old southpaw had a career-best 3.20 ERA (3.56 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP with 48 walks and a career-high 166 strikeouts in 188 2/3 innings over 32 starts for the Cardinals and Rangers last year. He was even better in the playoffs on his way to winning a World Series ring with Texas. Montgomery is a below-average strikeout artist and would be moving to a tough ballpark and division if he lands with the Red Sox, but he's still worth a gamble as a No. 3/4 fantasy starter because of his control and ability to generate weak contact.
The Boston Red Sox remain in play to sign free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery, as one National League executive said on Sunday that "we hear the Red Sox and Scott Boras had a good meeting recently and may get some deal eventually done on Jordan Montgomery." The 31-year-old southpaw hasn't found a team that is willing to meet his contractual demands yet this offseason after helping the Texas Rangers win the World Series last fall. In 32 combined starts with Texas and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2023, he went 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 48 walks and a career-high 166 strikeouts in 188 2/3 regular-season innings. Boston could definitely use the rotation help, but a move to the demanding American League East wouldn't be the best landing spot for Montgomery, who lacks true upside in fantasy due to his lack of swing-and-miss stuff.
Even with spring training having already started, free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery and his agent, Scott Boras, have not dropped their asking price, according to an industry source. Along with the Texas Rangers, who he won a World Series ring with last year, the Boston Red Sox have been interested in the southpaw this offseason. By the time Montgomery lowers his demands to the point where he could be a reasonable fit for the Red Sox's budget, he'd also be affordable to many other clubs as well. Montgomery's wife, a dermatologist, is serving a residency at a Boston hospital, so choosing the Red Sox would have that appeal. The 31-year-old has a below-average strikeout rate, but he makes up for it by rarely walking hitters and inducing soft contact.
The Texas Rangers are making progress on a local TV deal this offseason and now seem likely to be back in play to re-sign left-hander Jordan Montgomery and make a run at free-agent lefty closer Josh Hader. The Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Angels are possibilities for Montgomery if he doesn't return to the World Series champions. Hader, meanwhile, has been connected more to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Montgomery has also been linked to the New York Yankees, where he spent the first six years of his career. The 31-year-old was a huge midseason acquisition for Texas in 2023, as he had a strong 2.79 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 11 regular season starts for the Rangers late in the year. Hader would immediately become Texas' primary closer as one of the most dominant left-handed arms in all of baseball.
