Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop prospect Jordan Lawlar is set to be promoted to Triple-A Reno, according to MLB Pipeline. The top prospect in the Arizona system has battled a hamstring injury for most of the summer but will now return to the top level of the minor leagues. Across 15 games across the Rookie League and Double-A this summer, the No.7 ranked prospect in baseball has held a .304/.403/.482 slash line with five doubles and one round-tripper. Last summer at Triple-A Reno, the former sixth-overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft posted a stellar .358/.438/.612 line with five home runs. While the 22-year-old has had a disappointing season, he could make a strong case to open the 2025 campaign in the big leagues if he could have a strong finish at the top level of the minors.

Lawlar aggravated his left hamstring in July, two games into a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League after initially hurting it running out a triple in the ninth inning of a game on June 15 at Triple-A Reno. The 22-year-old has a bright future at the next level, but injuries continue to get in the way of his development. He has only been able to play in 15 games at three minor-league levels in 2024 and has hit .304/.403/.482 with an .885 OPS, a homer, 16 RBI and five stolen bases in his 67 plate appearances. Given how much time he's missed due to injuries the last couple seasons, it's a long shot that the Snakes will call him up late this year or for the postseason if they qualify.

The initial timeline provided was for six to eight weeks. In addition to his hamstring injury, Lawlar, a first-rounder back in 2021, spent time on the injured list in the minors earlier this year due to a thumb injury. Because of his thumb ailment, Lawlar didn't make his 2024 debut until May 29. As a result of his thumb and hamstring injuries, the 22-year-old has played in just 13 games in 2024 and has essentially lost an entire season of development. Because of all the lost time, expect Lawlar to play winter ball this offseason. He's unlikely to be an option if Arizona advances deep into the playoffs again.
