Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that "if Jarren Duran is healthy, he's our leadoff guy." Duran impressed with a .295/.346/.482 slash line with an .828 OPS, eight home runs, 34 doubles, two triples, 40 RBI, 24 stolen bases and 46 runs scored in 362 trips to the plate and 102 games in his third big-league season with the BoSox in 2023, and he fared just fine against left-handed pitching as well. His season was cut short in late August when he needed surgery to fix a flexor tendon in his left big toe, but he's fully healthy in camp and will be ready for Opening Day. Duran might face some competition in center field from defensive wizard Ceddanne Rafaela, but even if Rafaela were to win the job, Duran would be a lineup regular in right field. Consider Duran a fine upside No. 3 outfield option in fantasy drafts.
The San Diego Padres have expressed interest in acquiring outfielder Jarren Duran from the Boston Red Sox, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. While San Diego has engaged in discussions with Boston, they're not alone. Heyman notes that several other clubs have also reached out to the Red Sox. After a horrendous 2022 season, Duran had a major resurgence last year, slashing .295/.346/.482 with 24 stolen bases, a 120 wRC+, and 2.4 fWAR. He can also provide long-term contributions given that he's under team control through 2028. It's unclear whom Boston would target in return for Duran, but it's worth noting that the team faces an uphill battle to be competitive in the AL East this year. Therefore, the Red Sox could benefit from adding a package of prospects to bolster their farm system.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran (toe) is fully cleared for spring training and won't have any limitations in camp. Duran had surgery to fix the flexor tendon in his left big toe in late August but should be fully healthy this spring and for the start of the 2024 regular season. The 27-year-old is expected to be Boston's starting center fielder this upcoming season after slashing a strong .295/.346/.482 with an .828 OPS, eight home runs, 40 RBI, 34 doubles, two triples, 24 stolen bases and 46 runs scored in 102 games in his third year in the big leagues. A full-on breakout in 2024 isn't out of the question for the speedy Duran, but his power and on-base skills still leave a lot to be desired. But if Duran can stay healthy all year, he should be a valuable contributor in all fantasy formats.
