Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran (calf) is starting in left field and batting leadoff in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Atlanta Braves. Duran was scratched from Sunday's spring training game on Sunday, and the team's game on Monday was rained out. The 28-year-old is back in there now, though, after dealing with a minor calf injury. Duran broke out in 2024 as a first-time All-Star with a .285/.342/.492 slash line, .834 OPS, 21 home runs, 75 RBI, 34 steals and 111 runs scored in 160 games in his fourth year in the big leagues. He led the league in plate appearances (735), at-bats (671), doubles (48) and triples (14) and should now be considered a top-10 fantasy outfielder heading into the 2025 regular season, even if he is due a little bit of regression.

This is not believed to be a serious issue, but the Red Sox are holding out Duran due to calf soreness. It's not surprising to see the Red Sox taking the cautious approach this early into camp. The expectation is that he'll be back in the lineup after a few days. For now, Roman Anthony will take over in left field and bat leadoff during Sunday's game.

The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey writes that Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran is expected to see more playing time in left field in 2025 with Ceddanne Rafaela in center field. Rafaela was forced to move to shortstop last year out of necessity when Trevor Story suffered a season-ending shoulder injury early in the season. With Story returning in 2025, Rafaela should spend more time in center field, which will push Duran to left. From a fantasy perspective, it won't change Duran's outlook much, although it could make him a little more attractive in leagues with specific left, center and right field starting lineup spots. Even if the 28-year-old takes a small step back in production in 2025, he'll be one of the better leadoff hitters in baseball. Duran continued to improve his strikeout and walk rates a year ago and also had a career-high barrel rate. He is RotoBaller's No. 10 fantasy outfielder.
