Pablo Reyes Could Make Opening Day Roster

New York Yankees infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes is emerging as a favorite to make the Opening Day roster. According to Chris Kirschner, Reyes appears to be higher on the current depth chart than infielder Oswald Peraza. During spring training, Reyes has posted a strong .326/.434/.488 slash line with one double and two long balls. He has swiped two bags and held a strong 9:9 BB:K. Last summer, he appeared in 22 contests in the MLB, split between time with the Red Sox and Mets. Across this short stint, Reyes has held a .183/.234/.217 slash line with two doubles. Across 234 career MLB contests, Reyes has posted a modest .248/.309/.349 line with eight round-trippers and 13 swiped bags. Fantasy managers in deeper AL-only formats should monitor his progression as he could carve out a role on the MLB roster.

Yankees Sign Pablo Reyes, Cristian Hernandez To Minors Deals

The New York Yankees signed utilityman Pablo Reyes and right-hander Cristian Hernandez to minor-league deals on Monday. Reyes, 31, has six seasons of MLB experience, most recently playing for the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets in 2024, where he hit a combined .183/.234/.217 with no homers and five RBI in 22 games played. He has played every position on the field except catcher and sports a career .248/.309/.349 slash line with eight homers, 54 RBI and 13 steals in 233 games. Hernandez, 24, has not pitched above Double-A and had a 3.40 ERA with 44 strikeouts and nine stolen bases in 42 1/3 innings for Double-A Reading in the Philadelphia Phillies organization this past season. Reyes, given his experience, is probably the better bet to play for the Yankees during the 2025 season as a utility bench option.

Pablo Reyes Designated For Assignment

The Boston Red Sox designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment on Monday to make room for recently acquired first baseman/designated hitter Garrett Cooper on the active roster. Reyes wasn't able to carry over his strong performance at the plate from last season and was hitting just .183/.234/.217 with no home runs, five RBI, one stolen base and four runs scored in 60 at-bats with Boston early on in 2024. If the 30-year-old isn't claimed on waivers or traded, he could head to Triple-A Worcester and remain in the organization. With Triston Casas (rib) on the 60-day injured list, the 33-year-old Cooper is expected to see plenty of playing time at first base for the BoSox, making him worth a waiver-wire pickup in deep fantasy leagues.
