Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Chris Murphy (elbow) has thrown two bullpen sessions during spring training. He only threw 10 pitches in his first session but was able to increase it to 15 during his second session. The 26-year-old has only thrown fastballs so far. Murphy is slowly working his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last April. He was unable to pitch at all during the 2024 campaign. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status throughout camp. He is currently targeting to face live batters on April 10. The southpaw made his MLB debut during the 2023 campaign and held a 4.91 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP across 47 2/3 innings. He struck out 49 batters and posted a modest 8.0 percent walk rate. When cleared for action, Murphy should compete for a role in the Boston bullpen.

Murphy will be rehabbing all offseason and will not be ready to roll for the start of spring training in February or for the start of the 2025 regular season. However, barring a setback with his left elbow, the 26-year-old southpaw should be able to contribute in a relief role for the Red Sox at some point next season. The former sixth-round selection in 2019 out of the University of San Diego made his big-league debut in 2023 as a multi-inning reliever and went 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA (3.70 FIP), a 1.41 WHIP, one save, 49 strikeouts and 17 walks in 47 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for the BoSox.

Boston Red Sox reliever Chris Murphy (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. The procedure was performed by renowned elbow expert Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. Murphy's 2024 season comes to a conclusion before it began after he appeared in 20 games with the Red Sox in his MLB debut last season. The 25-year-old worked to a 4.91 ERA in that time, but his 3.70 FIP, 3.88 SIERA, and rock-solid 15.1% K-BB% all indicate he was far better than his surface ERA suggests. However, he did struggle to a 6.32 ERA across 15 outings (nine starts) with Triple-A Worcester as well. Murphy is likely to miss a good chunk of the 2025 campaign given the timing of the surgery.
