Nick Martinez Throws Simulated Game

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez (ribs) threw a live batting practice session on Saturday. The right-hander threw three innings of a simulated game as he works his way back to full health. The plan is for Martinez to build his way back up into being a starting pitcher. The 33-year-old could end up turning into a swingman type of role depending on how the rest of the rotation shakes out in Cincinnati. At the moment, Martinez isn't a very appealing option heading into fantasy drafts. However, it sounds like the right-hander is making good progress in his recovery.

DJ LeMahieu Avoids Serious Injury

New York Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu (foot) was forced to exit early during Saturday's game. The veteran slugger fouled a ball off his right foot and underwent imaging this weekend. Luckily, the X-rays came back clean which means LeMahieu has avoided serious injury. The team will likely give LeMahieu a few days off for the pain and swelling to stop. The expectation is that LeMahieu will be fine heading into Opening Day.

Cal Raleigh Returning On Sunday

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh (heel) is back in the starting lineup ahead of Sunday's spring training contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Raleigh will be back in the lineup after sitting out of Saturday's game due to a minor heel issue. The 27-year-old will bat fifth and be behind the plate for Sunday's contest. Raleigh has become one of the better power hitting catchers in the league. He does have flaws at the plate, but his power numbers are legitimate which gives him solid fantasy value.

Jose Leclerc Likely To Be Closer

Texas Rangers relief pitcher Jose Leclerc has a strong possibility of opening the regular season as the team's closer, according to manager Bruce Bochy. The 30-year-old ended last season as the closer and appears in a good spot to keep that role. Last season, Leclerc finished with a 2.68 ERA, 2.14 WHIP, and 67 strikeouts in 57 games with the Rangers. It's worth noting that veteran right-hander David Robertson could be in the mix as well. However, Leclerc looks locked in for a majority of the save chances in Texas right now. He should be at least a top-20 closing option heading into the regular season.

Max Meyer An Option For Opening Day Rotation

Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said that he isn't ruling out right-hander Max Meyer for the team's Opening Day starting rotation given all the starting pitcher injuries in spring training. "I think everyone's on the table," Schumaker said. Bryan Hoeing, who was projected to be a multi-inning arm out of the bullpen, is also a candidate for the season-opening rotation. The 25-year-old Meyer was sent to minor-league camp earlier this week, but the Fish could call him back with Eury Perez (elbow), Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder) all ailing with Opening Day coming up quickly in the rearview mirror. Meyer is the team's top pitching prospect and has thrown seven scoreless innings in Grapefruit League action, making him an intriguing stash candidate in deep-mixed leagues. However, his 2024 upside will be limited after he missed all of last year due to Tommy John surgery.
