Gunnar Henderson Expected To Play In Spring Game Monday

Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that third baseman Gunnar Henderson (oblique) is expected to play in the team's Grapefruit League game on Monday. The Orioles have held Henderson out of the early spring training slate due to an oblique injury that he suffered early in camp. The 22-year-old's injury was never considered serious, though, and they have been slow-playing him strictly as a precaution. As long as he doesn't suffer a setback with his oblique injury once he begins playing in Grapefruit League games, he should be just fine for Opening Day in late March. Henderson backed up the hype as one of the faces of the future for the franchise with a breakout 2023 season, and he should be considered a top-five fantasy third base target in upcoming drafts.

Josh Jung Doing "Baseball Activities"

Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that third baseman Josh Jung (calf) has begun doing "baseball activities" at camp. Jung is taking some swings in the batting cages on Sunday. Jung, the team's starting third baseman, suffered a left-calf strain early in spring training and is just now resuming baseball activities. As long as he doesn't suffer any further setbacks and is able to get into Cactus League games soon, Jung still has a chance to be ready to play by Opening Day at the end of March. The 26-year-old has developed a reputation for being injury-prone early in his MLB career, but he was still a first-time All-Star in 2023 despite missing extended time due to a thumb injury. Jung hit .266 (127-for-478) with 23 homers and 70 RBI in 122 games last year and is RotoBaller's No. 10 fantasy third baseman heading into his second full season in the bigs.

Braves GM “Highly Confident” Ronald Acuna Jr. Will Be Ready

Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (knee) has a great chance to be in the Opening Day lineup, according to the team's general manager Alex Anthopoulos. Anthopoulos was on MLB Network Radio on Sunday morning with Jon Morosi and said he was "highly confident" that Acuna would be in the team's Opening Day lineup. The reigning NL MVP's health has been a hot topic this offseason as he's been dealing with meniscus irritation in his surgically repaired right knee. The fact he's been dealing with irritation in the same knee where he tore his ACL back in 2021 is why there has been so much concern. The 26-year-old is heading to California this week to have his keen examined by a specialist but the Braves GM sounded confident that everything will work out. Acuna is coming off a sensational 2023 season in which he slashed .337/.416/.596 with 149 runs scored, 41 home runs, 106 RBI, and 73 stolen bases over 643 at-bats. He's so important to the Braves that they're going to be extremely cautious with him. We should find out more about his status following his visit with the knee specialist later this week.

German Marquez Set To Begin Throwing Bullpen Sessions This Week

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (elbow) is scheduled to start throwing bullpen sessions this week, according to general manager Bill Schmidt. Marquez, who underwent Tommy John surgery last season, hasn't had any bullpen sessions since his surgery. The 29-year-old veteran started just four games last season before landing on the injured list with an elbow issue. In those four starts, he compiled a 4.95 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 17:3 K/BB Ratio over 20 innings. The Rockies GM noted that Marquez should make it back to the starting rotation after the 2024 All-Star break, barring any setbacks. Marquez has had effective stints throughout his eight-year career but he's hard to trust every time he takes the mound due to his team context and home ballpark.

James Wood Tearing Up Spring Training

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood is raking through the first eight games of Grapefruit League play. The 21-year-old prospect is slashing .500/.636/1.063 with three home runs, six RBI, and one stolen base over 22 plate appearances. He's also walked six times and only struck out thrice. In his most recent contest, he hit cleanup and served as the Nats' DH. The hot start is very encouraging for Wood, who showed an impressive blend of power and speed across two levels of the minors last season (26 home runs, 91 RBI, and 18 stolen bases). He hit .262/.353/.520 to go along with the aforementioned counting stats with Nationals' High-A and Double-A affiliates. The hot start certainly gives him a chance to crack Washington's Opening Day roster but that is still far from a guarantee at this point. He's a must-roster in dynasty leagues and is an intriguing late-round pick in redraft leagues if it becomes clear that he's got a chance to make the team. Either way, he's a name to monitor moving forward.
