Giancarlo Stanton's Elbow Injury Is "Severe"

New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton's (elbow) injury is considered "severe" in both elbows. Stanton noted that this injury could have been caused by "bat adjustments." Fantasy managers should continue monitoring his status, but he is still unsure when he will resume baseball activities. Given this update, Stanton may be sidelined for a significant period during the 2025 regular season. Bryan Hoch of MLB.com noted that if surgery would be needed, it would be season-ending. Last season, the 35-year-old appeared in 114 contests and held a .233/.298/.475 slash line with 20 doubles and 27 home runs. He generated an elite 20.7 percent barrel rate and a 55.3 percent hard-hit rate which placed him in the 99th and 98th percentile among qualified hitters. If Stanton were to miss a majority of the regular season, the Yankees will likely have several players move to the designated hitter spot throughout the season.

Luis Rengifo Returns To Starting Lineup On Saturday

Los Angeles Angels second baseman Luis Rengifo (hamstring) is returning to the starting lineup on Saturday evening to face the Milwaukee Brewers. Rengifo is covering the keystone and batting in the six-hole. The infielder was dealing with cramps in his hamstring throughout the week. However, seeing him return to the lineup relatively quickly suggests the injury is not serious and will not put him in danger of missing Opening Day. Last season, Rengifo appeared in 78 contests and held a .300/.347/.417 slash line with 13 doubles and six home runs. He swiped 24 bags and added 41 runs and 30 RBI. Under the hood, he generated a .262 xBA with a strong 14.5 percent strikeout rate. Fantasy managers should expect Rengifo to operate as the team's everyday second baseman during the 2025 campaign.

Tigers Sign Jose Urquidy To One-Year Deal

The Detroit Tigers signed free-agent right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow) to a one-year, $1 million deal on Saturday that includes a $4 million club option for 2026, according to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. Urquidy underwent Tommy John surgery in June of last year. After signing him, the Tigers placed both Urquidy and right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (elbow, hip) on the 60-day injured list. The 29-year-old Urquidy won't be able to make his debut with Detroit until sometime in the second half of the season, but if the Tigers like what they see when he returns, they can pick up his option for next season. Depending on the state of Detroit's starting rotation, there's a good chance Urquidy returns in a relief role later this year. In his five years with the Houston Astros, Urquidy had a 3.98 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with a below-average 19.6% strikeout rate and 5.8% walk rate in 405 innings pitched.

Brayan Bello Unlikely To Be Ready For Opening Day

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello (shoulder) is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. Manager Alex Cora noted that the right-hander is progressing well but he is still behind. Bello has been dealing with shoulder soreness throughout most of camp and will now likely open the season on the injured list. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status in case he begins to turn the corner. If Bello were to open the season sidelined, fantasy managers should expect Richard Fitts or Quinn Priester to compete for the open spot in the rotation. Last season, Bello logged a career-high 162 1/3 innings of work. He posted a 4.49 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP. He tallied 153 punchouts and held a high 9.3 percent walk rate. However, he did generate a solid 51.3 percent ground-ball rate. When he is cleared to return, he will carry value in deeper standard formats.

Drake Baldwin Expected To Be Opening Day Starter

Atlanta Braves catching prospect Drake Baldwin is expected to be the team's Opening Day starter. Earlier in camp, starting catcher Sean Murphy (rib) suffered a fractured rib and is expected to miss at least 4-to-6 weeks of action. Baldwin is considered one of the top prospects in the Atlanta system. Last season, Baldwin saw his first extended look at Double-A and held a .244/.313/.337 slash line with six doubles and four home runs across 52 contests. He then earned his first look at Triple-A where he posted a strong .297/.407/.484 slash line with 13 doubles and 12 home runs across 72 games. He held a 52:54 BB:K ratio and tallied 55 RBI. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during spring training, but it appears the Braves are expected to give their young backstop the starting job. Chadwick Tromp, Curt Casali and Sandy Leon will compete for the No. 2 job.
