Riley Greene Falls Double Short of Cycle Wednesday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene had a terrific Wednesday night, falling just a double short of the cycle and going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in a 9-2 victory against the Minnesota Twins. At the halfway point, Greene already has a career-high 16 home runs and 43 RBI to go along with his modest .260 batting average. If the young lefty surpasses the 30-home run mark, he will easily be a bargain at the 146 ADP he was drafted at to start the season. Should he continue to excel in the cleanup spot the rest of the season, he could be a top-50 fantasy player going into 2025.

Matt Vierling Returns On Wednesday

Detroit Tigers outfielder/infielder Matt Vierling (foot) is back in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the hosting Minnesota Twins, playing third base and batting leadoff against Twins rookie right-hander David Festa, who will be making just his second major-league start. Giovanny Urshela will move across the diamond to first base and will bat in the eight-hole. Vierling was held out of the starting lineup in each of the last two games due to soreness in his left foot. The 27-year-old will return to a .250/.285/.437 slash line with a .722 OPS, 10 home runs, 33 RBI and 35 runs scored for the Tigers in 268 at-bats this year. Vierling struggled in the month of June, hitting .188 (19-for-101) with three home runs, four doubles, a triple, five RBI, five walks and 25 strikeouts in 24 games played. He'll be hoping to turn things around in his first game in July on Wednesday.

Keider Montero Starting On Wednesday

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Keider Montero has been recalled ahead of Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. The 23-year-old will slide into the rotation with Casey Mize (hamstring) heading to the injured list. Montero has already made two appearances with the Tigers this season. Neither of them went overly well considering he holds an ugly 9.45 ERA across 8 2/3 innings. Montero won't be a recommended streaming option ahead of Wednesday's game.

Kerry Carpenter Shut Down After Experiencing More Discomfort

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (back) experienced more discomfort in his back while completing his return-to-play progression and is now back to rest and rehab on a daily basis. Carpenter is attempting to return from a lumbar spine stress fracture and had resumed baseball activities on June 21. The 26-year-old wasn't going to be ready to return to the Tigers before the All-Star break in mid-July, but now he may not be ready to play in the big leagues again until well into the second half of the year. Carpenter was in the midst of a breakout season before landing on the injured list on May 29. The former 19th-round selection in 2019 was hitting .283 (41-for-145) with eight home runs and 29 RBI in 50 games in his third big-league season before landing on the shelf. Fantasy managers still stashing him may have to wait a while.

Casey Mize To Land On Injured List On Wednesday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) will be placed on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a hamstring injury that he suffered in his last start on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels. It was initially believed that Mize was suffering from a hamstring cramp on Sunday, but it turned out to be a more serious injury that will now sideline him through the All-Star break in mid-July. Jack Flaherty is dealing with more back problems and will miss his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins, so the team's No. 5 prospect, Keider Montero, will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to make his second big-league start on Wednesday. Montero, who struggled in his first MLB start, could stick in Detroit's rotation following the All-Star break if he pitches well on Wednesday and Mize isn't ready to go when he's eligible to come off the IL.
