Tyler Holton Serving As Opener Against Cleveland

Detroit Tigers left-hander Tyler Holton will serve as the opener for Detroit on Tuesday in Cleveland against the division-rival Guardians in what will be a bullpen game for the Tigers. The Tigers will be happy if the 28-year-old southpaw can give them two to three innings to start this contest, but fantasy managers should be avoiding him as a streamer against the first-place Guardians. Holton has a decent 3.17 ERA (3.63 FIP), a 0.87 WHIP, a career-high three saves, 42 strikeouts and only 11 walks in 54 innings in his third year in the big leagues in 2024, but only one of his 39 appearances has coming in a starting role. He has not gone more than two innings in an outing since May 21 against the Kansas City Royals, when he managed to toss 3 1/3 frames while allowing two earned runs. Fantasy managers can find much better streaming options on Tuesday's full slate of games.

Reese Olson Dealing With Mild Shoulder Injury

Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson's shoulder injury appears to be mild after testing, according to manager A.J. Hinch. However, there's still no timetable for how long Olson is expected to be on the 15-day injured list. A right-shoulder strain caused the 24-year-old to be removed from his last outing on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, and he landed on the IL the following day. This is good news for Olson, but it remains to be seen if he'll miss the minimum 15 days. The former 13th-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018 has looked better in his sophomore campaign, posting a 3.23 ERA (3.11 FIP) and 1.18 WHIP despite a reduced 21.7% strikeout rate in 103 innings pitched over his 19 starts for the Tigers. Olson deserves to be stashed in deep-mixed leagues, especially if he could return on the first day he's eligible to be reinstated from the IL.

Tarik Skubal Keeps It Rolling In 11th Victory

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal continued to add to his Cy Young resume with his 11th victory of the season versus the division rival Cleveland Guardians on Monday. The left-hander fired seven innings and despite allowing 10 hits, gave up just one run, one walk and recorded six strikeouts. Skubal continues to be rock solid for managers and has arguably been the top pitcher in the league this season with an 11-3 record to go along with a 2.34 ERA. A must-start every time he is on the mound, Skubal will look to keep it rolling when he faces the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Reese Olson Lands On 15-Day Injured List

The Detroit Tigers announced on Sunday that they placed right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list with a right-shoulder strain and also optioned infielder/outfielder Ryan Vilade to Triple-A Toledo. Olson heads to the shelf after being taken out of his start on Saturday early against the Toronto Blue Jays with shoulder soreness. Given the nature of the 24-year-old's injury, fantasy managers shouldn't necessarily expect him to return in the 15 days. Although Olson's 21.7% strikeout rate leaves something to be desired, he's been solid in his second big-league season in Detroit, posting a 3.23 ERA (3.12 FIP) and 1.18 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 31 walks in 103 innings over his 19 starts. It's unclear who will replace Olson in the starting rotation, but fellow right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) could be close to coming off his IL stint.

Jake Rogers Crushes Grand Slam In Toronto

Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers blasted his seventh home run of 2024 on the road against the Blue Jays on Saturday. Rogers started the scoring in a six-run sixth inning that saw Detroit go up 7-0. His only hit of the afternoon was a doozy. With the bases loaded and nobody out, the Tigers backstop blasted a 391-foot rocket to left field off reliever Trevor Richards. Homer-less throughout July, the 29-year-old has been looking to get his power stroke back after hitting 21 homers in 2023; this is a step in the right direction, but he is mainly an option for deep two-catcher formats.
