Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) made his first minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday and tossed two shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one while throwing 24 of his 39 total pitches for strikes. It was a nice first rehab outing for Olson. Because the 25-year-old has been sidelined due to a shoulder injury since late July, he's going to need a couple more rehab appearances before potentially rejoining Detroit's starting rotation for the tail end of the season in late September. His strikeout rate of 21.7% this year is slightly down from his rookie campaign, but overall, it's been a solid second year for Olson, who has gone 4-8 with a 3.23 ERA (3.15 FIP), a 1.18 WHIP and a 92:31 K:BB in 19 starts in his second big-league season. The next step for Olson will be to recapture the dominance he had exhibited in the minors.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Tyler Holton has been named the opener for Monday's game against the San Diego Padres. The left-hander has been an important piece to the bullpen this season. He holds a 2.44 ERA and 0.83 WHIP across 77.1 innings this season. Unlike most relievers, Holton has been able to throw multiple innings during most of his outings. He figures to give the Tigers a few innings on Monday before Ty Madden takes over for a bulk of the relief. This seems like a good idea for Detroit, but fantasy managers won't get much value with these pitchers only throwing a few innings each.

Detroit Tigers star lefthander Tarik Skubal won his 16th game Saturday afternoon, a 2-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. In the process, Skubal also became the first major league pitcher to record 200 strikeouts in 2024. Skubal went eight innings, striking out eight batters and surrendering only one run, a first-inning home run to Tyler O'Neill. On the year, the veteran is 16-4 with a 2.51 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, and 201 strikeouts in 168 innings. Skubal has become one of the best starting pitchers in baseball this season.

The Detroit Tigers designated left-hander Joey Wentz for assignment on Friday, opening up a spot on the 40-man roster for the return of right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) from the 60-day injured list. The Tigers haven't officially named a starter for their game on Friday at Comerica Park against the Boston Red Sox, but it's expected to be Mize. The 27-year-old won't be a recommended streaming option on Friday evening against the visiting BoSox, mainly because he's returning after missing two months due to a hamstring strain, even if he posted a 2.63 ERA with 17 strikeouts and only four walks in 13 2/3 innings with Triple-A Toledo in his four minor-league rehab starts. The former first overall pick in 2018 out of Auburn deserves attention in deeper-mixed fantasy leagues now that he's back. He's gone 2-6 with a 4.23 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a weak 16.8% strikeout rate in his 16 starts in 2024.

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter had a big day at the plate on Tuesday as his team beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2. Carpenter went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a two-run home run in the sixth inning off of Angels starter Johnny Cueto. Carpenter has had a productive and consistent 2024 season up until this point. However, he has been very hot lately. In his last seven games, he is slashing .320/.393/.600 with two homers and six RBI. The 26-year-old is available in 18% of Yahoo! leagues and may be worth claiming if you need some power down the stretch.
