Matthew drafted a competitive team with a few key hitters off to hot starts and the league’s top pitcher — Gerrit Cole — who owns a 4-0 record with a miniscule 0.95 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. Cole was one of just three pitchers drafted in the first round of 15-team leagues this March and certainly looks like the guy most likely to return first round value.
His second-round pick, Fernando Tatis Jr., provides a nice boost to his offense as he returns to the San Diego Padres lineup this weekend after serving the final 20 games of his suspension. Tatis provides fantasy value across all five categories (HR, RBI, SB, R, AVG) and joins an offense who could certainly use a boost.
Another key addition on Matthew’s team was Toronto Blue Jays 3B Matt Chapman, whose bat is absolutely scorching through the first three weeks. Chapman leads the American League in batting average (.415), has hit five homers and no one in baseball has been hitting the ball harder than him (97.5 average exit velocity, 32% barrel rate).
His roster does have a few holes and weak spots, specifically at middle infield. Tatis returning helps tremendously but the trio of Whit Merrifield, Miguel Rojas and Brice Turang are spots he will need to find a way to upgrade this season.
The other concern with his roster would be the health of Eloy Jiménez and Byron Buxton. Both have massive power upside and could easily hit 35-plus homers in a full season. It’s the “full season” part that is a problem since both are frequent visitors to the Injured List. Jimenez has already spent a 10-day stint on the IL this year and is still looking for his first homer. Buxton’s playing time is being cautiously managed by manager Rocco Baldelli and he’s off to a bit of a slow start.
The type of roster that can compete against and beat Matthew’s team on Bettle is one that has less-volatile/higher-floor type hitters and pitchers who have good track records of health. A bet against Matthew’s squad is assuming history repeats itself with a few of his key bats (injuries) and that the waiver wire won’t be able to provide significant replacement value on those hitters.
