The Memorial is one of the PGA’s best signature events, because Muirfield Village is an unbelievable golf course and there’s a cut. It’s also one of the most powerful CF Models of the season.
Course Fit: The 2025 Memorial Tournament
As you can see, this CF Model isn’t just powerful, it’s super unique. There’s a major emphasis on accuracy instead of distance, yet approach play is still more predictive than usual. Typically, when accuracy is this important, it’s hard for approach play to spike because great iron players only get to use that skill-set if they drive it well.
Short games are incredibly important here (remember when Matt Wallace finished second because he got up and down from everywhere?) and putting is predictive since you’re guaranteed to have a bunch of testers for par each round. This is a phenomenal test of golf all-around.
Hot Takes for the 2025 Memorial Tournament
1. Justin Thomas is the best spend-up
JT and Tommy Fleetwood have the two highest GPP Scores and are third and second, respectively, in projected strokes gained. But I’m giving the nod to JT because he has shown us more of a ceiling. Fleetwood, as consistent as he’s been, does not have a single event where he’s gained three strokes per round this season. JT has done that three times in his last five starts, including his win, and six times this season. This ceiling is super important if fading Scottie Scheffler, since Scottie has a 58% chance of a top-five finish in our simulations (just absurd). We want our spend up to keep pace with him and then beat the Scottie lineups with the rest of our lineup.
We have JT miles ahead of Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay at the moment, but the field is not giving JT the same respect.
