New York Jets worst record in the league +1400 (0.5 units) — FanDuel

The 2019 New York Jets finished dead last in yards per game, yards per play and most punts per offensive score, and had the second-fewest points per game. They won seven games off the back of an over-performing defense and the second-easiest schedule in football. This year, they won't have that luxury with the second-hardest schedule in all of football.

  • Yes, with Sam Darnold, this team performed better, but they won close games against the worst teams in the NFL. As a head coach, Adam Gase is now 25-7 in one-score games, which are considered toss-up games. This should come crashing down toward the mean soon, which spells trouble for the lackluster coach. Outside of one-score games, with Gase in charge his teams are 5-27. You live on the edge long enough, eventually you are going to fall off the cliff.
  • Beyond the coaching, the talent is a major issue for this team. They lack weapons on offense and have a brand-new offensive line. The Jets needed a new offensive line, after allowing Darnold to be pressured on 40% of his drop-backs and averaging just 1.5 yards before contact per rush, the worst rate in the league. However, the Jets offensive line will have more new starters than any in the league and with a lack of offseason program, the fragility of the continuity could cause major issues. Beyond that, the Jets have a raw second-round pick at receiver in Denzel Mims, and oft-injured slot receiver in Jamison Crowder and Breshad Perriman, who has three career impact games in four seasons in the league. The offense is one of the least talented in football and are unlikely to be bailed out by the defense this year.
  • Gone is the Jets best player Jamal Adams, traded to the Seahawks. While they won the trade long term, right now the Jets are a defense with no pass rushers and lackluster secondary. Yes, the Jets finished 10th in DVOA, but finished eighth-worst in adjusted sack rate and gave up points in bunches to the top teams in the league. The Jets only played six offenses ranked in the top 20 in points per game and gave up on average 30.8 points per game. 10 of 16 games were versus bottom 12 scoring offenses, a luxury they won't have this year just seven games currently on the schedule vs bottom of the barrel offenses.

This team lacks chemistry and talent, is coached by one of the league's worst coaches of all time, just traded away its best player and face one of the most difficult schedules in the league. Not only should the Jets have struggled to come close to their win total, but at 14-1 they are worth a shot at finishing with the worst record in the league.
