As for next Saturday's preseason contest against the hosting Houston Texans, it's fair to expect Jones to make an appearance in the first quarter before third-stringer Tommy Devito replaces him and soaks up the lion's share of the remaining snaps during exhibition play.

The young quarterback also chipped in two yards on four rushes, but his legs weren't much of a factor. DeVito's performance was far from fantasy-relevant, but he did what backup quarterbacks are supposed to do: keep the offense moving without making costly mistakes. While his yards per attempt won't supplant Daniel Jones, DeVito's ability to avoid turnovers is a positive takeaway. If Lock's injury lingers, DeVito may see more snaps in training camp and the final two games.

Before leaving with a hip ailment, Lock went 4-for-10 for 17 yards and an interception while running for 12 yards on two carries. He was replaced by Tommy Devito under center. We should have a better idea of the severity of Lock's hip injury on Friday. The former Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks signal-caller will open the 2024 season in the Big Apple as the Giants' backup to Daniel Jones, leaving him with virtually no fantasy appeal.

However, Giants reporter Connor Hughes believes he is not a legitimate threat to take the QB1 job. "[Lock] isn't that good. Very obvious of that during offseason program. He's a serviceable starter, but I don't think he's a threat to be the starter unless it really hits the fan," Hughes wrote on X. The former second-round pick by the Denver Broncos out of Missouri has thrown for 5,283 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions in his first 28 game appearances. He has a 9-14 record as a starter. While Jones has had plenty of downs, he's had more flashes of upside than Lock, so he's likely simply the better player. Given New York's lack of weapons, Lock would have limited fantasy upside if he's called into action this year.

Despite a report on Thursday evening that Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider said the New York Giants convinced him that quarterback Drew Lock would compete for a starting role with the G-Men in 2024, the Giants did not tell Lock that he would be competing for the starting gig with Daniel Jones in order to sign him. Lock signed a one-year, $5 million deal with New York on Tuesday to fill the traditional role of a backup behind Jones, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. Schneider said Seattle wanted to re-sign Lock, but he opted not to return to the Seahawks. Jones is coming off a torn ACL and is running out of chances to prove himself as the QB of the future for the Giants, but there is no QB controversy between him and Lock to open the season.
