Fantasy Football Stat of the Day: More drives means more opportunity

(Leading up to the 2021 NFL season, FTN’s Tyler Loechner will dive into the fantasy football numbers to bring you his Fantasy Stat of the Day, five days a week.)

Your fantasy studs aren’t going to score points if their team never has the ball. This is obvious, but we don’t talk about team opportunity quite enough in the world of fantasy analysis.

Today’s Stat of the Day article will take a look at the teams that had the most drives in 2020. We’re not looking at the success of the drives (that will come soon) — just counting the drives. More drives means more opportunity.

The Buccaneers had by far the most drives in 2020, and Washington ranked in the top 10

Here are the top 10 teams from last season ranked by the number of drives their offenses had:

A few thoughts from this study:

This list features most of the best offenses in the league. The Buccaneers, Bills, Rams, Steelers, Ravens, Chiefs, Saints and Seahawks take up eight of the 10 spots on this list. It’s no coincidence those teams also house so many top-tier fantasy players.
The Washington Football team and Philadelphia Eagles slipped into the top 10. It’s a big reach to say either of these teams had good offenses last season, but their presence on this list suggests that some of the top players we’re drafting from these teams — Antonio Gibson, Terry McLaurin, Jalen Hurts, Miles Sanders — could be in for big years.
Let Russ Cook. The Seahawks would likely rank higher on this list if Seattle let Russell Wilson air it out for an entire season rather than just half of a season. He’d push for fantasy overall QB1 status — and DK Metcalf for overall WR1 status — if that ends up happening.
The Tom Brady effect in Tampa was on full display. Brady and the Bucs dominated the league with 243 drives last season, easily the most in the league. This is one reason there are so many fantasy-relevant players coming out of Tampa.
