After cleaning house over the last week, releasing Tyler Lockett and trading away Geno Smith and DK Metcalf from the offense, the Seattle Seahawks started putting things back together on the first day of free agency Monday, signing 10th-place MVP finisher Sam Darnold fresh off a rejuvenated season in Minnesota.
It’s hard to view this as a win for Darnold’s fantasy value. He moves from a Kevin O’Connell offense that featured Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson to a Seahawks roster that just cleaned house at wide receiver. Metcalf is now in Pittsburgh, and Lockett is looking for a new home. Of course, he does have ascending star Jaxon Smith-Njigba at his disposal. Seattle also figures to address the position this offseason and currently hold five picks over the first two days of the draft.

The good news for Darnold is he’ll play in a system similar to the one he’s been in over the past two seasons. Klint Kubiak is at the helm at offensive coordinator for the Seahawks. Like O’Connell in Minnesota, Kubiak is from the Kyle Shanahan/Sean McVay tree, which, of course, derives from the Mike Shanahan/Gary Kubiak tree. Darnold also played under Kubiak in 2023 when he was the passing game coordinator in San Francisco.
Despite the current lack of depth at wide receiver in Seattle, Darnold still figures to be in the QB2 conversation in 2025. As of right now, he isn’t an especially desirable target in 1QB leagues, but he’ll be in the mix as a deep second option in superflex. Of course, that could change if the Seahawks add more talent to their wide receiver corps.
