The Arizona Diamondbacks announced that starting pitcher Zac Gallen (hamstring) left Friday's start against the Seattle Mariners due to tightness in his right hamstring. Before exiting, Gallen surrendered three runs on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts over five innings of work. He was pulled from the game after his 64th pitch in the sixth inning and relieved by Scott McGough. Although the extent of the setback won't be known until Gallen is evaluated further, the D-backs and fantasy managers should be relieved the ace isn't dealing with an injury to his throwing arm. It remains to be seen if Gallen will need a trip to the injured list, or if he'll just need his next turn in the rotation skipped, but his next start is tentatively slated for Wednesday's series finale versus the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers. The 28-year-old workhorse right-hander owns a 3.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 35:9 K:BB over 32 frames (six starts) this year.
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen pitched himself into a no-decision Monday against the division-rival Colorado Rockies. Gallen struck out 10 hitters, which was great, but he labored through five innings, giving up three runs and scattering eight hits. This start for Gallen came at Coors Field, so it's encouraging to see he was still able to strike out 10 hitters in the thin-air conditions of Denver. He is tentatively scheduled to face the St. Louis Cardinals' average offense on Sunday afternoon. Gallen should always be started, regardless of the opponent.
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen put together a strong second start of the season in Tuesday's victory against the New York Yankees. Gallen earned a quality start over six innings by allowing three hits with zero runs, three walks and six strikeouts. Gallen held his own in this contest, but the he does have five walks on the season and that is a bit worrisome with him coming off a big workload in 2023. Regardless, Gallen has performed well for managers and is 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA. Next up will be a date versus the Colorado Rockies in a very favorable matchup.
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Monday that starting pitcher Zac Gallen will be the team's Opening Day starter. This will be the second consecutive season that the 28-year-old has earned the honor. Gallen will get a favorable matchup against the Rockies at home. He put forth another strong season in 2023, going 17-9 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 26.0% strikeout rate in 34 starts and 210 innings pitched. He finished third in the voting for the National League Cy Young Award and will be looking to build off that, making him a high-end fantasy option in all formats.
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen is scheduled to make his first spring Cactus League start on March 1 against the Cincinnati Reds, while right-hander Merrill Kelly will make his first start on March 8 against the Chicago Cubs. Including the playoffs, Gallen and Kelly threw 243 2/3 and 201 2/3 innings, respectively, in 2023. Kelly took some time off in the offseason before getting back to his training regiment that included range-of-motion exercises, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Because of the big workloads in their run to the World Series last year, the D-backs will make sure to take it easy on both pitchers this spring. Gallen is a low-end No. 1 fantasy starter, while Kelly profiles as more of a No. 4 to round out your fantasy rotation.
