Miami Marlins shortstop Xavier Edwards had a day to remember on Sunday, going 4-for-4 while hitting for the cycle in a 6-2 loss against the Milwaukee Brewers. The homer was also his first in the big leagues. Edwards has been on a tear since being called up, hitting .379 with a .956 OPS to go along with a homer and eight steals. The former top prospect had been hitting well in the minors before his call-up, so it doesn't seem like a total fluke that he's been doing this. Edwards should be rostered in most leagues at this point in the hopes that he can provide a great average and solid speed while scoring some runs out of the leadoff spot for the Marlins.
The Miami Marlins are recalling infielder Xavier Edwards from Triple-A Jacksonville after designating shortstop Tim Anderson for assignment on Tuesday. With Anderson now out of the picture in Miami, there will be more playing time for both Edwards and Vidal Brujan at shortstop with the Marlins looking toward the future. Edwards showed hints of his ability at the 6 when he covered for Anderson when he was on the bereavement list earlier this year, and while he still hasn't homered in 95 MLB plate appearances since debuting in 2023, Edwards has hit .287 (25-for-87) overall with five stolen bases. The 24-year-old switch-hitter is certainly worth picking up off the waiver wire in NL-only leagues for his speed, at the very least, now that he has a path to more playing time the rest of this season.
Miami Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards could get pushed off the major-league roster to open the year with Vidal Brujan and the recently acquired Nick Gordon also competing for bench/utility roles in spring training. Edwards, Brujan and Gordon all have similar skill sets. Edwards hit an impressive .295 in his first 84 major-league plate appearances last year while appearing at second base and center field. However, Brujan and Gordon are both out of minor-league options, meaning they must make the Opening Day roster and could push Edwards out of a bench role to open the season. The 24-year-old Edwards might have to outplay both Brujan and Gordon in camp. His best attributes are his speed and his ability to hit for average because of his high contact rates, but Edwards' playing time is in question.
