San Francisco Giants shortstop prospect Marco Luciano has been off to a hot start for Triple-A Sacramento. The 22-year-old was with the team this spring in the Cactus League, but struggled and was demoted to Triple-A to get more seasoning. He has always had a strong glove, but his hitting has needed to catch up and that hasn't been a problem early on in the season. In his first eight games, Luciano has hit a sparkling .375 with three doubles, four RBI, nine walks and 11 strikeouts. The near 1:1 walk to strikeout ratio is important as Luciano has been prone to doubling his strikeout to walk rate historically. Despite his aggressiveness, Luciano has very good bat speed and can hit for power with double-digit homers in all four of his professional seasons. If Luciano can become a more patient hitter, he has all the tools to help fantasy managers. For now, he is best served in dynasty leagues.
The San Francisco Giants optioned shortstop Marco Luciano and catcher Blake Sabol to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. Many folks expected Luciano to open the year as San Fran's starting shortstop, but instead he'll open the year in the minors after missing some time with an injury in spring training. Veteran Nick Ahmed will open the 2024 season as the Giants' starter at the 6. The 22-year-old Luciano should still be considered the team's best long-term option at shortstop, but it remains to be seen when they'll deem him ready to return to the majors. Sabol, 26, is currently the Giants' No. 3 catcher behind Patrick Bailey and Joey Bart, so he'll bide his time on the farm until the team needs another catcher at the big-league level.
San Francisco Giants shortstop Marco Luciano (hamstring) is making his Cactus League debut on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, starting at shortstop and batting second in the lineup. The Giants have been cautious with their projected Opening Day shortstop in camp due to a minor hamstring injury, but Luciano is ready to roll now. The 22-year-old has been one of the team's top prospects in recent years and will finally get his shot at the 6 in the big leagues now that Brandon Crawford has moved on. Luciano is a glove-first shortstop right now, though, which doesn't make him all that attractive in single-year fantasy leagues. The Dominican infielder hit .231 (9-for-39) with no homers or RBI in his first 14 big-league games in 2023 and could face competition from Casey Schmitt and Nick Ahmed if he struggles early on.
San Francisco Giants rookie shortstop Marco Luciano (hamstring) has been scratched from Saturday's lineup against the Chicago Cubs, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. His injury was described as a minor hamstring issue on Friday, and while it's enough to hold him out of a game, this is likely an example of the Giants exercising caution. There's no reason to push players beyond their limits this early in Spring Training, so Luciano will get the day off Saturday before the club re-evaluates his status. Casey Schmitt will draw the start at shortstop in Luciano's absence.
San Francisco Giants shortstop Marco Luciano (hamstring) is dealing with a minor hamstring issue, but if he comes out of Friday's workout fine, he will be in the Cactus League lineup on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. It's something to keep an eye on early in spring training, but it doesn't sound like anything too serious. The 22-year-old is projected to serve as San Francisco's starting shortstop in 2024, taking over for Brandon Crawford. The Dominican infielder made his big-league debut last year and played in only 14 games, going 9-for-39 (.231) with no home runs, no RBI and 17 strikeouts. Right now, Luciano's glove is ahead of his bat, and if he struggles mightily in his first full year in the majors, the Giants may be forced to send him to the bench or back to the minors.
