Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (elbow) exited the game on Friday night against the Philadelphia Phillies with left-elbow soreness. It was a tough night for the D-backs health-wise in the 5-4 road win, as catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) also left early. Gurriel did manage to go 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his 10th of the year, in the second inning. The 30-year-old appeared to hurt his elbow during an at-bat in the seventh inning. Without much more information on the severity of his injury, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day heading into the second game of the series in Philly on Saturday. Veteran Randal Grichuk, who entered the game in right field, would stand to see an increase in playing time if Gurriel's injury is serious enough to land him on the injured list. The Cuban slugger entered Friday's game with a .256 average, nine homers, 43 RBI and 33 runs scored.UPDATE: Gurriel is just dealing with a sore elbow and didn't require an X-ray. Manager Torey Lovullo said he feels good about Gurriel avoiding the injured list, but the team will see how he feels on Saturday.
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (illness) is starting at left field and will bat third on Sunday. Gurriel was scratched from Saturday's lineup with an illness but is already cleared to return. The 30-year-old has posted a disappointing .236/.276/.366 line with six home runs and three stolen bases across 53 games this season. However, he was riding a four-game hitting streak prior to Saturday and looks as if he is returning to form. Gurriel should remain in your fantasy lineup all season and has a great matchup this afternoon and is worth consideration in DFS as he faces southpaw Jose Quintana who holds a 1-5 record with a 5.06 ERA.
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is out of Tuesday's lineup against the hosting Texas Rangers. It's a maintenance day for the 30-year-old veteran, who will be replaced by the speedy Jake McCarthy in left field on Tuesday. Gurriel was a first-time All-Star in 2023 and got off to a hot start in 2024, but he's cooled off considerably over the past month, hitting .168 (17-for-101) with just one home run, five doubles, and seven RBI across his last 26 outings. Look for him to rejoin Arizona's lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Rangers and left-hander Andrew Heaney. The righty-hitting Gurriel is batting .323 with two homers, five doubles, and 10 RBI in 65 at-bats against left-handed pitching this year.
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not in the team's starting lineup for the start of a series on Thursday against the division-rival San Francisco Giants on the road. The 30-year-old will take a seat for a day of rest, with outfielder Jake McCarthy playing left field and batting ninth and Randal Grichuk in right field and hitting eighth versus Giants right-hander Logan Webb. McCarthy is hitting .375 with an RBI in 16 career at-bats against Webb but will have limited DFS upside in the nine-hole. Meanwhile, Grichuk has one hit in his 10 career at-bats against Webb. Gurriel has five home runs and 20 RBI already this year in 18 games played, but he has just one hit (a homer) in his last 16 at-bats over four games, so he could use a little breather here.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. recorded a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Saturday. With the game tied 1-1, and runners on first and second with no outs, Gurriel Jr. took Kyle Gibson deep. Gurriel Jr. finished the game going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBIs and did strike out once. The outfielder now has four homers on the year.
