New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Foul Territory on Friday that as of now, he'd probably put outfielder Juan Soto second in the team's lineup and outfielder Aaron Judge in the three-hole. It sounds as though infielder DJ LeMahieu would be a primary leadoff hitter, too, although Boone also mentioned second baseman Gleyber Torres and outfielder Alex Verdugo for the top of the order. Whoever is leading off could impact the order of Soto/Judge in the second and third spots. The only thing we know for sure is that Soto and Judge will be hitting back-to-back. Either way, this is a huge boost in protection for Judge after he set the American League home run record in 2022. Soto's already high fantasy value also gets a boost with his move from San Diego to the Bronx and the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium.
Outfielder Juan Soto and the New York Yankees agreed to a one-year, $31.5 million deal on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration for the 2024 season. It's a new record deal for an arbitration-eligible player, beating two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani by $1 million from his one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023. Soto and the Yankees haven't approached a contract extension, and the belief is that he and his agent, Scott Boras, will play things out until Soto hits the open market following the 2024 season. The 25-year-old Dominican will be worthy of taking in the first round of fantasy drafts this spring, especially now that he'll play half of his games at Yankee Stadium. Soto hit .275/.410/.519 with a .930 OPS, career-high 35 home runs, 109 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 568 at-bats with the San Diego Padres in 2023.
The New York Yankees and outfielder Juan Soto are still working on a salary figure for the 2024 season. The Yankees agree that Soto will break Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani's arbitration-eligible $30 million record, but they haven't agreed yet on how much Soto will beat it by. The 25-year-old left-handed slugger will be paid handsomely in his first year in the Bronx, but the two sides haven't had contract-extension talks, and many expect Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, to play out the final year of his contract in 2024 before he reaches free agency next winter. Soto got off to a slow start in San Diego in 2023 but quickly turned things around to finish with a career-high 35 home runs while driving in 109, scoring 97 runs and stealing 12 bases while hitting .275. The move to the Yankees gives him a power boost in fantasy and he's going to continue to be one of the best in OBP leagues as a first-round asset.
