New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone sees second baseman Gleyber Torres hitting between fourth and sixth in the lineup this year, and also in the leadoff spot when needed. Boone thinks Torres is highly motivated heading into the final year of his current deal and thinks he can improve as a defender as well. Hitting in the heart of New York's improved batting order would make the 27-year-old infielder even more attractive as a top-five fantasy second baseman. DJ LeMahieu, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge are expected to fill the top three spots in the lineup for the Bombers. Torres' numbers don't exactly jump off the page, but don't forget that he's now reached 24 home runs in four of his five full seasons in the majors while also recording double-digit stolen bases in each of the last three campaigns.
New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres, who is entering the final year of his deal in 2024, said on Wednesday at spring training that wants "to be a Yankee for life." However, there have been no extension talks with the team to this point. Torres said he understands the team's hesitancy since the last two extensions for Luis Severino and Aaron Hicks didn't work out due to injuries. The 27-year-old Torres has been a staple for the Yankees at the keystone the last two years, hitting a combined .266/.330/.452 with a .782 OPS, 49 home runs, 144 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 298 games played. Contract issues aside, Torres has maintained a solid power/speed combination at the second base position for fantasy managers and could have an even better year in 2024 in what should be an improved Yankees lineup.
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that the team has not had any extension talks with second baseman Gleyber Torres, noting that he is their second baseman "for this season." Torres is in the final year of his deal and will become a free agent after the 2024 season if the two sides don't reach a long-term extension. The 27-year-old was a bright spot for the Yankees last year, slashing .273/.347/.453 with 25 home runs, 68 RBI, 13 stolen bases and 90 runs scored in 672 trips to the plate. He managed to lower his strikeout rate considerably and has now reached the 24-homer mark in four of his last five full seasons, which is an achievement for a second baseman. Regardless of whether he remains in New York beyond this year, Torres will be a solid second base target in fantasy in what should be a more productive Yankees lineup.
Infielder Gleyber Torres and the New York Yankees agreed to a one-year, $14.2 million deal for 2024 on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration. A career-low 14.6 percent strikeout rate helped Torres to a fine offensive season in 2023. He finished with a .273/.347/.453 slash line, an .800 OPS, 25 home runs, 28 doubles, two triples, 13 stolen bases and 90 runs scored in 672 plate appearances over a career-high 158 games played. The two-time All-Star has settled in as New York's everyday second baseman and should hit high in the batting order again in 2024, giving him plenty of fantasy appeal for a Yankees lineup that should be stronger next season. Torres has produced 24 home runs in four of his five full major-league seasons, giving fantasy managers a solid floor.
The Athletic's Brendan Kuty writes that it doesn't seem likely that the New York Yankees will look to keep infielder Gleyber Torres around long term. Torres has said he wants to remain with the team for the rest of his career, but the Yankees have discussed dealing him at each of the last two trade deadlines and haven't started any kind of extension talks with him. New York could also consider trading him at this year's deadline before he becomes a free agent next winter. The Yankees will want to extend outfielder Juan Soto next year, and ace Gerrit Cole will almost certainly use his opt-out in his nine-year, $324 million deal, but the Yankees will counter by activating their 10th-year option. The 27-year-old was a bright spot for the Bombers in a disappointing 2023 campaign, so if Torres has another good year in 2024, he'll certainly want to see what he can get on the open market.
