Pete Fairbanks Walks Three, Tagged With First Loss Of The Season

Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks walked three batters and was credited with three earned runs in the Tampa Bay Rays walk-off loss to the Colorado Rockies on Friday. Fairbanks entered the game in a close situation with the Rays up 7-6 and walked three straight batters to load the bases before getting removed. He was credited with the loss after Ryan McMahon hit a walk-off grand slam against Jason Adam. After the game, Fairbanks was critical of the condition of the baseballs the Rockies were using but stated that he needed to be better and that "that's what happens when you don't throw strikes." After three appearances in 2024, Fairbanks is still looking for his first save of the season. Despite his struggles, fantasy managers should continue to roll with Fairbanks in all league formats.

Justin Lawrence Yields Five Runs In Home Opener

Colorado Rockies closerJustin Lawrenceimploded on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits while recording just one out. Lawrence entered the ninth with the Rockies holding a 6-2 lead and exited down 7-6. The right-hander avoided the loss thanks to heroics fromRyan McMahonas the Rockies won 10-7. The 29-year-old faced many consistency issues in 2023 as the Rockies closer, and it appears he'll be a bit unpredictable again this season. After starting with a shutout appearance against Arizona, this was different from the outing Lawrence and the Rockies were hoping to follow up with. Nothing indicates that Friday's performance may bump Lawrence out of Colorado's closer role, but fantasy managers should keep an eye on it going forward.

Twins Acquire Diego Castillo From Orioles

The Minnesota Twins acquired Triple-A infielder Diego Castillo from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday in exchange for cash considerations. The Twins now have two Diego Castillos on the Triple-A St. Paul roster -- one a pitcher and one a position player. The 26-year-old Venezuelan will give the Twins some more infield depth in the minors with third baseman Royce Lewis (quadriceps) out at least a couple of months with a severe quad strain. Castillo can play some outfield as well but is likely to stick at St. Paul for now. The fact that he's been with six different teams this offseason tells you all you need to know. Castillo made his MLB debut in 2022 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and hit .206/.251/.382 with 11 homers and 29 RBI in 96 games but had just one trip to the plate in the majors in 2023 with Arizona.

Brewers Claim Vladimir Gutierrez Off Waivers From Marlins

The Milwaukee Brewers claimed right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Nashville. Gutierrez allowed three earned runs on three hits (one home run) while walking two and striking out four in a four-inning relief appearance with Miami this year before being designated for assignment. The 28-year-old former undrafted free agent has experience as both a starter and reliever in his major-league career. Before appearing out of Miami's bullpen this year, Gutierrez hadn't appeared in the majors since 2022 with the Cincinnati Reds. In his 154 2/3 big-league innings over 33 outings (30 starts), Gutierrez has a 5.47 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with 72 walks and 121 K's.

Francisco Mejia Signs Minor-League Deal With Brewers

Free-agent catcher Francisco Mejia signed a minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, according to a source. He'll head to Triple-A Nashville, where catching prospect Jackson Quero (shoulder) is dealing with a shoulder injury early in the season. The 28-year-old Mejia became a free agent when he was released by the Tampa Bay Rays on March 28. Quero could miss extended time down on the farm, so Mejia will give the team more organizational catching depth behind William Contreras and Gary Sanchez at the major-league level. The 28-year-old Mejia is a switch-hitter from the Dominican Republic and has a .239/.284/.394 career slash line with 29 home runs and 118 RBI in his seven big-league seasons with the Rays, Padres and Guardians.
